I remember going on a school trip to Southampton in 1961 and seeing the
three Saro Princess flying boats cocooned on the Solent - it was an amazing sight for a 9 year old

Oh yes and for the chuffs fans the excursion train for that trip was pulled by "Battle of Britian"

My parents often remarked on seeing the Princess's when they went to Southampton in the fifties.

I never saw thm as they were scrapped the year before my first ever visit to the UK when I was 11

Yikes!..I started school in 1961, aged 5...British military brat school in Malta..

Not quite Southampton.

They were stored on the ramp at RAF Calshot at the mouth of Southampton Water, right next to the spot where the Schneider Trophy S6bs were launched.

At that time we used to go to summer camps for RAF kids there and I sneaked through the barriers and got right up to G-ANLO, the only Princess that flew. The cocooming plastic was in very bad condition and I managed to reach up and touch her before a Marine Section Sergeant saw my legs from the other side of the a/c and hauled me away.

Needless to say I have never washed that hand since.........

They went to Southampton..........on a boat and they passed them at Calshot, and on the way out as well.

So they saw all three when they went to Southampton..
