Brilliant photos Bones.

I can't remember where she was broken up, but I seem to remember a piece on tomorrows work about a special (at the time) explosive conduit which they were going to use. Funny the things that stick in your memory.

Where were the photos taken?

Agree.. lovely shots Bones. Never nice to see a ship off to the breakers but there's an exception to every rule

Nostalgia time indeed.....

Apart from going on board that once, two 'Ark Occasions' come to mind.

Firstly the amazing 'through the windscreen' film of an F-4 flying a dummy low level strike against the Ark used during the opening shots of the 'Sailor' TV series.

Needless to say that's going to be reproduced in FS04 before much longer!

Secondly Raymond Baxter's commentary on the Ark's homecoming on her last cruise. A totally heart rending occasion made more realistic by someone who knew just how to put the true feeling of the time over to Joe Public.

Now we have a magnificent scenery model to bring those memories back again, thanks so much.
Regards
Kit

Calypsos, ref the F4s, they were modelled using some plans I pulled off the internet, I then tweaked them to match the Iris F4 (I think, unless Alpha do one in which case it might have been theirs). However I'm willing to admit they might be bit off, I'd have to find a Phantom and a Wessex next to each other to check, which gives me something to do on Saturday!
As for the water texture, assuming you're not using a Beta BGL, where the wake poly made a shadow, using the default water at least you shouldn't get a dark rectangle around the boat.
Glad to see so many people enjoying the Ark, as I've had about 5 hours sleep in the last two days I'm now going to bed!

Seaking, EXCELLENT model WELL DONE my thanks to you and all concerned, hopefully you wo'nt mind I have sailed her out to the Philippines to Manila Bay and Subic Bay to save on travelling back and forth to the UK from here.

While it is easy enough to move Ark via editing the xml file, moving the effects will take some time I think, if you do a ver 2 or do Eagle or something else is it possible to build the lights into the model so it can all be moved in one go. This is in no way a criticism just that a lot of people want a different location.

2 small points re effects, the ensign effect seems to be missing and the funnel smoke effect does'nt work for me so I sustituted it for one that does and replaced the wake with a dynamic wake effect where you can see the spray on approach.

There are a few Apps availiable for making flatten bgl's very easily.

Please do not read this as destructive criticism as it is not meant to be I can find no fault with it.

Many Thanks
Rich

Hey Rich

All feedback is very welcome and appreciated, like I have said before I am no sim expert but wanted to see the old girl in the sim, Phil and Fraser made this happen for me.

We came up with the four locations that would suit most people, but I had a feeling once she was out she would be moved all over the planet with those that know how.

As the for wake effect you put in, very interesting, looking forward to seeing some pics of that.

This was out first project so I knew there might be a few teething problems here and there, that's all part of the fun of it to my way of thinking.

Practise make perfect in the end.

Seaking, Thanks for the reply, at the moment I am doing the Subic Bay move but have to rename Ark to Eagle to avoid no shows in the go to menu. when done I will let you have a copy of the xml so you can see the wake bit that I added, is there supposed to be a ensign fx included ?

Again many thanks for a superb model.

I've only uploaded a handful of my aircraft photographs on the Net so that is why you will never have seen these pictures before. Exclusive to CBFS. I'll add that this situation is changing and you'll see more appearing as time goes on - some on my homepages and some on Airliners. It will take a while - there's 40 years of photos to go through.

I remember that bit about the explosive conduit too!
Where were the photos taken?
I don't know. We saw her on radar around midday when southwest of the IoM by 30nm. We tried to get an aircraft to fly out and get some shots but none were available until 1600. By the time we got airborne the carrier had dropped off the radar and so we flew towards Strangford Lough hoping to pick her up. That failed so we started a zigzag between the Irish coast and the Mull of Galloway - and I think we found her on the second leg. I'd guess roughly at N54:42 W05:17 (+/- 30nm) :worried:

Believe me when I say I was sorely tempted to try a touch and go - until we saw the stanchions around the lifts.

Hi Bones,

Fantastic yet sad photos.

I remember that time well as my father cried at this point! Having just served on her last farwell voyage in 1978.

To answer another question further up the thread she was broken down in Cairnryan, and I believe totally stripped by about 1986.

I was only 4 when I went on board a few times in 1978, and fell in love with the ship then.

I met Seaking55 over at the Alpha site where we had both repainted their Seaking in 824 colours from the Ark Royal.

So from there we started talking about getting the ship built for the sim. So I contacted a lifelong friend (skippybing) to model it for us, and I took on the texturing with Seaking55 handling all the nuts and bolts of the afcads etc...

It has been a long time in coming, it does have a few issues with crash detection, (which is easy to switch off in the sim I might add!) and niggles with textures, and possible static model size issues, but it is free! It was done as a labour of love for all involved not a money making venture so I hope all those that did download it enjoy it as it has been great to read all the feedback and comments.

Happy landings,

Sketchy

(Fraser)
