When you open the box, you will find warranty documents but none of them will be for the UK. I know this having bought a camera from ebuyer for the now ex girlfriend and having read info on the net.
They are called grey imports and can have implications on the camera warranty should you need it.

I've got a Canon Powershot S2 IS, very good camera. Will be investing in a Canon EOS 350D soon enough though (Woo!!!)

I'd be tempted with the Sony H2 but if not then the Fuji S5600

Don't forget you'll have to purchase a memory card, batteries and charger though.

Although you didn't want a big zoom, you know you'll be gutted the next time you see something in the air and your shiny new 4x zoom fails to capture it

Yes sorry about that Fournier! I did look at them, that FinePix S5500 looks rather swish so its a toss-up between that and the Sony H2 that CB mentioned.

As for a camera for mum; she seems pretty taken with the Can A430 so I think thats all sorted!

I think I remember reading that the Canon Powershot range are the same working parts as the Ixus range, just in a bigger casing. We've got a couple of Ixus that have worked very well as take everywhere cameras. The 3 x zoom can be a limitation, but then it is time to get out the other camera.
So for the price the Powershot should be good.


I've also got an old Olympus C2100UZ with 10x optical zoom. The picture size in pixels is not good by today's standards, but it has taught me that I want a digital SLR with that zoom capability. The time to take a second shot tends to be longer with a non SLR camera. Also if you are trying to pan the camera ready for the next shot, an electronic viewfinder goes blank so is not a lot of use.

I had considered the Lumix range with that nice 12 x optical zoom, but I think I will have to keep collecting the pennies for a Nikon D70s. Note the "s" suffix - new model compared to the D70 and now uses CF cards.

And looks like a 70-300 zoom will do the job of my old 450mm telephoto on a 35mm SLR. Which 70-300mm zoom are you using Dave? Nikon, Sigma or something else?

Or should I just dust down my Olympus OM-10 again? How much is film these days? Can you still buy film? Could buy a lot of film for the proce of Nikon D70s :think:

I'm not much of a photgrapher as I just like to point and shoot. Last year I was looking for a digital SLR and thought I'd confuse myself with all the lens options, f-stop this and aperture that etc. In the end I plumped for a Panasonic Lumix FZ20 which has a really nice 12x zoom and also a manual focus 'ring'. I'm still getting to grips with it as I tend to just leave it in auto and zoom in/out as required.

All my Duxford pics were taken with this. A fair few came out blurred as the autofocus just isn't quick enough for the close up and fast fly-by's but it did manage to capture a few nice ones. For static shots long zoom distance shots it's great. I have a 1GB memory card in and didn't fill it on the day even though I took @500 snaps.


I got mine mail order from Bristol Cameras. I think the FZ20 may have been superceded by now though.
