Kevin, I certainly hope your eyesight has fully recovered from your football mishap. Ouch! That must have been painful. I did not notice the difference until the next day after all the eye drops used to dilate wore off. No bandages but I had to wear plastic shields over my eyes. The doctors don't promise the surgery will improve your eyesight but it certainly did in my case.

The injury was 30+ years ago so is long recovered. In fact it only took only a few days. Rather than painful, it was scary. Thinking back, it was a bit more than 5-a-side game (but not a full 11-a-side) as we played outdoors on an 'astroturf' pitch. I had the ball and tried to cross it to my teammates in the penalty area, but one of the defenders immediately blocked it and the ball flew up into my face. Straight away I noticed my vision was cloudy (I could see colours and the cloudiness didn't increase with distance). I finished playing the game, but straight after went to the University Medical Centre. They arranged for a taxi to the Birmingham Eye Hospital, concerned that I may have a detached retina (fortunately not). Then, whilst sitting in the waiting room, my vision in my left eye began to deteriorated until I could see nothing through it (that was REALLY SCARY!). On inspection, I was told that the pressure in my eyeball was 9 times normal and that the cloudiness (and loss of vision, which did return), was due to cells within the eye being detached and floating in the vitreous humour. I had drops to dilate the pupil, which made reading almost impossible and everywhere intensely bright. The next day, the medical staff were amazed to find the pressure in my eye back to normal. They said they'd never seen a recovery like it before. I was therefore allowed home (I did have a follow up check, where everything was normal). The annoying thing was that when I got to my Parents house (I was still living there at the time), they were having a barbecue. So, whilst everyone else was out in the sunshine, I was stuck in the living room wearing sunglasses and with the curtains closed as the pupil dilation drops hadn't worn off.

Did it stop me playing football? Not a chance!
