There is a reasonable explanation as to why the one installed in the my friends car and the others pictured on the internet differ in appearance.
The threaded fittings will often change the final clocking of the final assembly
And
Perspective ... Otherwise known as thee "angle of the dangle"..


But then, , there are different design styles.

Should have gone with my first instinct... it looked like a whistle, but why would anyone attach such a thing to a car?
Just goes to show.

Just look at all the room they had to work on the engine. I'm envious. Of course I'm not envious of the poor souls having to hand crank that engine. I've read that if you cranked one incorrectly you could break your wrist. Ouch!

With variable pressure for each two revs it must have been quite tuneful - wonder if the Keystone cops had them?

I assume that there is a valve to stop the device making a noise on the cylinder down stroke (as this could also reduce the amount of fuel/air mix drawn in).
Otherwise, you could end up with something like this -

When the valve for the explosion whistle is open, the cylinder is not under compression when the spark plugs is energized. So it doesn't really matter about air fuel ratio, right?
As to the device being over kill... the idea behind the device is to garner attention. And It most certainly does do that.

Thanks guys , and thanks AirB for the gold star . I'll give it to the other 1/2 . Her dad was an '' Halton Brat '' [ RAF Engineer ] and one of his squadrons was 31 nicknamed these days 'Goldstars' . They are still with Tornado GR4s at RAF Marham , and several anniversary paint schemes have featured gold stars .
To be honest , it was lucky guess ; 'tho does look a bit like a steam whistle . I thought it might be an early April Fools joke , or an elaborate wind up .
'Cos I'm only an old tractor driver with wings , No engineer ; only an amateur fitter at best .
My cousin has a Model T and drove us to and from on our wedding 24 yrs ago . Jules was not impressed in the pouring rain , and I certainly did not look under the bonnet .

I'm using Flickr and am very happy with it. It took a little getting used to for me...the 'click here and now click way over there' flow seemed kind of strange at first. After posting a few pics though I'm now an old hand at using Flickr. Hope this helps, Dave.
