Mike,
(Understanding you have a working knowledge mind you)
Forcing a shut down after the reboot process has started could someday lead to disaster. That is an environment is were MS updates are installed.
If you use auto updates, you may not know when a update sits waiting for you to shut down the PC.
You know those updates that warn you not to shut of PC -updates are installing .. bluh bluh bluh...

I reserve the forced shut down for times when the OS is up, but locked up.

Just keep a start up disk and IT tools on a disk so you can repair start up files.. :worried:

Dave,

Two words , mate
Murphy's Law..
If it ain't broke, don't fix it. ;)

Just as files cannot be changed when in use , files can't be saved when the HD is not running.
The sleep modes are programmed to wake up the devices connected to the MOBO upon HID, or network input. Then the HD spins up and the OS bootup files take over finishing the boot process.

What would have to be done would be to wake up the PC; identify open programs; save any open work; Name the work,, .... opps
and that's where it would stop the shut down process , Until the files were given a name.

... But listen to me, I couldn't even remember how to install add on scenery in FSX..

BY the way,, since you brought up the subject.... :wasntme:

The following works every time (provided A scenery folder has at least a scenery folder with one scenery bgl in it.)

click "Add Area" in the fsx scenery library settings menu.
Navigate ( no radio needed ;) ) to the scenery file you want to add; and click on it one time
It's highlighted
click on the open button in the scenery directory window
the subfolders will be seen
click in the open area under the files.

Done.

funny thing. If I double click the scenery file to see the sub folders , and then click on the open area . It doesn't take...... :S

Surely (and don't call me Shirley).. when a PC goes to sleep, it keeps whatever you were doing in memory. When you hit the space bar to wake it up again, does the entire PC not come to life in the background.. if not in the foreground :dunno:

Anyhoo.. I don't care. I've just spent 2hrs flying from Yeovilton to pick up Victorious somewhere off the south coast and in some horrible weather at times. When I got to where it should have been.. it wasn't there 8) So.. I had a 50/50.. go left or go right. The RFN gauge wouldn't pick it up (it won't if it was over 50miles when you first tried) so.. I went left.. as far as Portland where.. having not picked it up.. I did a 180 and went back down the coast. I eventually picked it up off the Falmouth bay area and about a mile off its stern.. FSX froze :wall:

Oh now I feel scared to start up the sim. that happens to me with the DoDo 206

The PC frezzes and a loud annoying beeping (in 2000 time) And I have to force it down.

Interesting... If I start the dodo in window mode and let the engine idle for a few minutes before I take off , The sim doesn't crash.
After flying for a few minutes I go full screen and It runs fine.
But if I have me an :worried: incident.. when the dodo reloads the engine won't start ... but the starter keeps running.

I'll figure it out.. someday.

Hmm.. I don't have any Dodo's.. yet :worried: This was the Cera UH60L :| Sound still running but everything else frozen. Opened task manager to see I'd got over 3.4gig in use (but another 4 going spare) and that FSXBooster and FSX were in 'not responding' mode. ASN was still running though 8) Impossible (for me) to say what actually caused it. Ironically.. I must have passed Victorious in poor vis. By the time I'd turned around at Portland.. it was a nice day down there :wall: AI.Player.dll would have had something to do with it as both Glamorgan and Fearless/Intrepid were missing. Piece of sh1t

That's what I thought. 2hrs is a long time to hand fly a helicopter

Oh no, sorry I didn't mean I was flying the same route .. it's mostly just with the DoDo bird Bell 206..

I've flown helo over an hour at a time. That's enough

sore arms , That reminds me ....
One day at KLNA , A bell 407 landed .. after the shut down the pilots got out. - one leaning forward slouched back and holding his shoulder .greeted a Aircoastal mechanic... and started walking to wards the FBO , the other pilot , not looking in bad shape. asked where the bathroom was. and off he went.
The fella with the contorted posture was groaning a bit ,
I asked "Are you OK "?
He said "yeah , just been flying too long"

"Well, where ya come from"? I asked.
He said .. "Utah"

I blubbered "Utah! :-O in that ? ..... *-) holy crap..
.... Well you made it in one piece at least".

Then he said, Oh this isn't our final destination.
Of course I asked .. "Where is that"?

He says..

Hatti

<Then it's like his words gave him a shot of pain and he leaned over a little more... poor fella..>

then I said , :-O Hatti... Damn!

Now... behind the scene ... the mechanic from Aircoastal had removed his ladder and tools to service the helo from his gofer cart he drove out to meet the pilots.

As the hunchback and I were taking, I watch the mechanic open the door and what not. .. then just as the pilot said Hatti. .. right?
The mechanic hollers across the ramp...
"Hey do you know your Air Conditioner is missing? <stepping on my Hatti ...damn- comment>
The pilot's eyes kinda rolled ....
Like ... yeah no wonder I've been sweating my butt off :|

  I really tried to keep from laughing ... but I 've talked with the mechanic a few times over the years... he's a bit of a character..

So I holler back ... I think he knows that!

Show over

Nice story Joe

No too.. I didn't think for one minute you were flying the same route  I'd like to get the Dodo 206 but from what I gather.. it's not got an idiot mode and I don't feel like going through the real routine every time I want to fly it. I like Cera's 'cop out' mode (selected from shift+1) which means I can 'go real' should I feel like it or just wash'n'go. I mostly wash'n'go

BTW.. I just ran the flight with real weather but this time from Portland. All 3 ships in company and I landed on each before sitting for a goof for half an hour. No error on shutdown (though I have put Airline traffic at zero). Don't wanna see airliners anyway

Nice fellow.
