Too technical MikeW? :dunno:

Judging by the tone of the posts under this heading, BRS probably means " B*****y Rotten Sunday"! :hide:

If Ian's laptop is 3 year's old, it won't be 2nd generation Intel i5 so a Sandy Bridge would be an improvement.

Two months ago I bought an Acer i5-2430M with 15" screen, 4Gb RAM and 1Tb hard disk from Sainsburys (!) because Mrs H told me that the current laptop was slow running Photoshop CS5 and Illustrator CS5 (that's the trouble with her having a i5-2500K desktop machine!). New laptop certainly does the job.

There's a question about whether to wait for Ivy Bridge laptops in Computer Buyer this month but the comment was that initial release of the laptop chips is the top end of the range = more expensive. Ivy Bridge are supposed to run 20% faster than Sandy Bridge but as yet that is just theory for the lower end laptops. Possibly Ivy Bridge laptops will force down the price of Sandy Bridge laptops, assuming of course the clearance hasn't already happened.

Just the happy conjunction of Bristol and Bottom...never seen a Beaver there, though.
'BRS' to me says 'British Road Services' - but that was a long time ago, in another country.

OK - one last go at getting this thread back on track! Yes, I know, it's a bit rich coming from me

Here's what I've picked up from advice here, reading and surfing. The 3rd generation (Ivy Bridge) processors are out now and priced similarly to the 2nd gen Sandy Bridge. There's a slight performance improvement and they're more efficient increasing battery life in laptops but not a huge leap over the older ones.

Microsoft have already announced a deal which allows you to buy a new W7 machine, register and then get an upgrade copy of W8 For £15 when it's released. Details here:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/wind ... rade-offer

The big laptop selling season is from now until September when the schools and Universities go back, so there will be some competitive clearance deals as the summer goes on.

So it doesn't matter too much which processor or OS but it's worth waiting until later in August if you want a good deal.

Ian :)

Well done for dragging it back mate

So.. what are you going to do then? Wait to see if you can get a good deal on an Ivy Bridge i5 or try and grab a Sandy Bridge cheap as chips? *-)
