Gary, with that Process Explorer program (and Task Manager for that matter) You can kill any process by right clicking and ... funnily enough - selecting "Kill Process". I don't use Firefox but I am wondering why it is running all the time on your PC even if your not browsing. Or am I missing something here?

Anyway, you could try to uninstall Firefox and then reinstall it. An excellent freeware program to do a thorough uninstall is the freeware version of Revo Uninstaller http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uni ... nload.html This program does a good job of cleaning leftover registry entries that many uninstallers leave behind.

I did the kill process yesterday and FireFox closed....but I don't want it to close I just want it to sit there

I often stop processes with task manager but they don't normally close.they just stop

An oddity that has happened a few time recently, only on the PC is that opening pages in IE can cause FF to crash

I'm a bit confuzzzed here and I'm guessing many of our readers will be too. Why would you want FF open but not active (eg.. on a blank page but online)?? Or.. is it that you keep FF open (on here for example) while you do other tasks I'm trying to get my head around this but am having difficulties

Here's what I mean..
I will open IE and see what's happening on the forum. On the odd occassion, a question is asked and I'll open another session/window to try and find an answer keeping '2' windows open. As soon as the answer is found (or if it can't be found), I'll close the second session/window and either reply here or leave well alone. At no other time do I keep either IE or FF open. They're sitting on the bottom taskbar ready to activate should I need them but I see no good reason to keep the programs 'open' without using them. I browse and if nothing new has happened, IE and/or FF are closed until the next time I want to go online. I understand that 'as a process'.. these things can load in the background so stopping anything you don't want in order to free up system resources is a good idea if you don't have a lot of ram but.. surely FF wouldn't cause a commit of 100% while inactive/closed

I need to go back and read what I've just written as it suddenly doesn't make sense Whatever.. try that full uninstall prog then a re-install after a restart. Somethin' aint right and while I'm sure FF isn't the cause of it, it's not helping

Yes....I'm using Firefox to work with and IE to surf

So I keep flicking on to other tasks then back to FF....no different to how I've always worked with IE


For example, if working on my databases I might have G-INFO open in FF along wit the the FAA site....so I'm flick back and forth from FF to word or Excel

So I'm looking up stuff on those pages as and when

When there is something that doesn't check out and I need to search for it..or come here for a nose I use IE

If it's nice weather I will have radar virtual open...but that's not often lately

I guess you thinking Radar virtual is a hogger and continually updating..well yes and no.it is active but I've had it up with no ill effect in the past and also closed it during these trouble and it's not improved the situation to any noticeable degree.

I had no problem before the reload when apart from all those I mentioned I'd had FS Repaint Photoshop and FSDS running as well and sometime FS.9 and the system ran well and FS9 had FPS in the 30's..it's not in the singles to teens

I don't have FSDS on the PC now and attempts to load Photoshop have failed and FS repaint is not loaded either, so in theory everything should be running like sh!t off a shovel.

Oh and I have Word IE FF and Excell all running on the snail drive notebook without any problems.

I'm guessing your monitor is a 42" Plasma to have all those things open at the same time!

Hmm.. I dunno what to say amigo I think I remember you saying you only had 1gb of ram so in order to have a fistful of progs open, especially some of the ones you've mentioned, you'd need a hefty chunk of virtual memory available on your hard drive so if either your ram or HD were not in good nick.. you'd run into problems. Looking at the original title of the thread 'Standby Error'.. this points to something else. When you go to close the system down, do you get 3 options.. standby, restart and shutdown?

Point is....about the ram

This was OK before the reload and the low power laptop I'm using as a temp works fine in that same way.....this is a laptop that actually takes time to open IE pages but it take no longer with all the above operating.....that is words excel and FireFox

This method of working is not new to me...I've always worked this way and only had this problem on the PC since the reload.

Sometimes I have to wait to shut things down as it queues for a bit of CPU time.

When I do try FS that is with everything else shut down..the FPS is worse than it used to be with everything open which only occurs when I'm checking work, not when using FS to actually fly.

Re the Standby Error.. do you get those 3 options? If you don't see Standby/Sleep (whatever it is.. I don't look!) your problem (THAT problem) is almost certainly down to a duff driver. If you DO see all 3 options.. how longs a piece of string?

Running only half of what you've hinted at with FSDS open, I'm surprised you ever got the Frightner compiled.

If it's a driver to do with graphics then it is likely to screw everything.....

Have you tried restoring to and earlier restore point before you started having problems?

What antivirus software are you running?
