Try this one, it shows the ASF hangar and the now knocked down one behind it. It can't be the 46 Sqn hangar as there were no trees to the lefthand side of it, would have been a hazard to taxiing aircraft.

Will keep looking

OK, I'll let you have copies in the next couple of days. I also have a landing chart and NDB approach plate (using the Fawley NDB, max TAS 120kts!) for Hamble from 1974.

PM me your e-mail or I can upload them to rapidshare.com as I did with the Tangmere stuff if you prefer.

I hope the IWM won't mind me posting one of its copyright photos for research purposes but this one of Thorney taken in 1938 clearly shows all 6 hangars.

Page 279 of Action Stations Volume 9 contains an account of a heavy raid on Thorney by 28 Ju87s on 18 August 1940 (just 2 days after Tangmere's "big day") during which they - despite being harried by Hurricanes of Tangmere's 43 and 601 Squadrons - "succeeded in badly damaging two hangars" which may explain the missing buildings.

Flirting a little dangerously with copyright issues, I know, but I found this low res "thumbnail" of a photo in the IWM's catalogue. It shows Thorney in July 1942.

I've enlarged the hangar area as much as I dare.

It looks to me as if the north-westerly of the six hangars has no roof (and possibly no side walls) and the south-easterly of the group is also badly damaged. Taking this photo together with the 1938 one would seem to suggest that all six hangars were built in 1938 with two being destroyed between then and 1942 (most probable date 18 August 1940) leaving the four-hangar configuration shown in your screenshot.

Hi Pete,

I'm affraid I'm going to have to remove those images. We have had a go at people in the past for the same thing, so its only fair to apply the same rule across the board. Sorry mate.

No problem at all with that Ben - as an assistant curator at an accredited aviation museum who regularly has dealings with the IWM I should have known better! :( Sorry and I hope it hasn't caused you (the forum) any embarrassment.

Not at all Pete, just trying to be even handed. I can think of someone who would find the photos useful, maybe via PM ;)

Bugger, wish I had seen those photos first!!!!

Pete,
Rapidshare is fine for me as I have an account and can re-start any DL that my slow connection gives up on.

Don't worry, Trev, I'll upload the Thorney and Hamble charts and the photos to Rapidshare later this morning.

Thanks to Pete P  , I am pretty sure that the missing hangar was removed by the Luftwaffe during 1940!

I have now also got the real NDB and ILS frequencies, which is better than making them up!
