In that case what did you think of the show? That site lists the air date as 21st Jun 09 so you must've already been able to see it.......

One of the reasons footplate crew get a bit muckier these days is that, because of the modern electrics in the cab they cannot
wash down the footplate and tender with a hose to keep the dust down as they used to.

What modern electrics at footplate level would an old steam loco have?

Anything that runs on the mainlines has to have a modern AWS system fitted at the very least or it's not allowed to run. If it's running on preserved rails only it can be as original as the owner wants.

Thanks for taking it down Richard, especially for the rude comment that wasn't needed.

Can a person stand corrected or be in error? The dates shown for last "season" on the site were the same as what shows in my saved programs on the DVR for the BBCA shows. I don't know if that is due to how Time Warner Cable shows the show information or if it's something else, but that is what I was basing my information off of looking at that and the website at the same time. Now that they've posted the new show (after I went to the website 2 days ago), then obviously that is the case. As for Series 13, I checked the BBCA website and doesn't show airing dates for the new "season" yet, so who knows when it'll be on here. They seem to be thin on showing even Series 12 shows right now which is odd as they usually put on a push of the "last season" around this time of year.

Thanks for the explanation Fodda. On the other hand in this day and age I would have expected that any electrics would have been weather proofed, it is not as if they would be under a comparative water-fall.

Of course, you're right, they'll more than likely be weatherproofed. But let's face it, Clarkeson looked like he'd been working hard... Maybe it was self applied to imply that he'd been firing all the way... :o

But to be fair, other footplate staff on that trip looked just as filthy as him in some shots.

And we were only theorising about not hosing down the footplate. Chances are, he kept wiping the sweat from his face with the arm of his jacket which would get pretty grubby.

And I've hung out of carriage windows behind enough kettles to know just how easy it is to get pretty dirty very quickly...
