Autogen is placed on top of the other layers, so I can't imagine why not, unless of course the devlopers have introduced a massiv exclude file as well, but I doubt it.

The default FSX autogen has been disabled for GenX as the autogen is placed fairly randomly and doesn't line up with specific objects on the photoreal textures. I have had varied success using all the old FS9 freeware autogen stuff that works with the FS9 VFR photographic scenery. Pretty much all of it works, but it's hit and miss as to what parts of the country are covered. The area around Bristol is pretty good.

You'll also find that some specific FS9 sceneries work as well, for example the pylons, refineries, docks, Gloucester, Bristol landmarks etc. Again, I'm not promising they'll work, but it's easy to remove the tick in the Scenery section and try again if there's a problem. FSX does compile its scenery database on the fly without the need for a sim-restart, which is one of the best updates from FS9 as far as I'm concerned.

Over at the Horizon forum there is talk about releasing an FSX version of AgenT (I think AgenTX - which would be logical). This is an autogen placement tool so you can happily plant trees, houses etc to your hearts content. The only problem though is that FS autogen is far far too big for the scenery so can look a bit odd, especially when you know the area well. New version of AgenT available in the summber but not sure it it's freeware or payware or something in between.

Regards,
Chris

So let's go back a couple of steps here... Does anyone know of a decent set of textures that make Europe look lees brown during winter?

This is what I use, worth every penny:

The screenshots make it look a little lurid but it got rid of the horrible brown colour during winter and really makes things look more natural.

To be honest, even with the low grade vid it looks a bit special.

Shame the pound's dropped so much against the Euro recently though, it's a bit pricey. I'll have to have a think on about that one.

Thanks for the link.

SceneryTech even uses default texture and mesh, but gives you a higher level of terrain-details (Landclass), and thus also minimizes the brown effect in summer.

SceneryTech and GroundEnvironment deliver for both FS9 and FSX.

This is another interesting thread. I've long thought that "Ultimate Terrain" is a very misleading title... as terrain is the one thing it doesn't include! In almost all circles outside of MSFS terrain means elevation, not the textures or autogen that are drapped/sit on top of it. Mesh is a very strange description for elevation data and from what I can tell is limited to the FS community (correct me if I'm wrong).

One of the "best" (whatever that means!) Digital Elevation Models (DEM) available for the UK was acquired by Intermap, using an Interferometric SAR (InSAR) onboard a Learjet. Their DEM data comes in two forms, Digital Surface Models (DSM), which represent bare Earth plus all vegetation, buildings etc. on top, and Digital Terrain Models (DTM) which represent bare Earth only. The InSAR wasn't able to sense beneath vegetation and buildings, so these were semi-automatically stripped off and the gaps interpolated over to create the DTM. This is an imperfect process and many large bits of woodland remain in the DTM, whilst some small hills (barrows etc.) and steep slopes have been smoothed. Both DTM and DSM are available at 5m grid spacing and are known as NextMap.

Horizon's GenX scenery used the NextMap DTM at 5m grid spacing. The v2 of GenX had the vertical resolution sampled as the sub-metre level. The GenX scenery and DTM only overs England and Wales of course, yet there is NextMap data available for the whole of Scotland as well, but it looks like we'll have to wait for GenX Scotland to get it.

FS Dreamscapes also sell NextMap products. They sell a 5 metre product for all of Great Britain including Scotland. This is also sampled at the sub-metre level vertically.

ANY photo scenery suppresses autogen, so for those who want autogen with good elevation data, or for those who just want the Scottish elevation data immediately then Dreamscape is the way to go.

HTH?

Hi Andy,

The dremscape stuff looks excellent! When they say United Kingdom, I'm assuming they only mean GB? i.e, they don't include NI?
