Yeah something about HMS Ark Royals final commission. What ever that was or was it Ark Royal's final trip as a catapult aircraft carrier and was going to get the ski ramp for the Sea Harriers & GR3. :think:Garry Russell wrote:Hi James

Purely because I'm fair to moderately drunk.
A bit over 30 years ago the previous ARK ROYAL conducted it's last aviation cycle, i.e. catapult launches and arrestor hook landings. In other words big pistons were filled with steam which resulted in aircraft being flung off the deck at speeds close to that required to maintain flight, or hit the back of the ship and caught a wire which slowed them from 130 to 0 knots in the space of about 100 yards.
The next day due to a combination of RAF propaganda and government ineptitude the deployable strike force of the country suffered a massive crash. Shortly afterwards ARK ROYAL, a 60000 ton ship was scrapped. Some time in the mid '80s a 20000 ton cruiser was named Ark Royal rather than Indefatigable, to appease a not particularly interested public.
The Ark Royal that could operate Phantoms and Buccaneers has nothing in common with the one that operates Harriers other than the name, and possibly a relative wind gauge. As a rough comparison, the last Ark could operate a strike group of ~40 aircraft at a push. We are now incapable of operating 40 strike aircraft from all our carriers if we went balls out to get everything working.

S!
Seems we have a small issue with semantics.
Is it Arrester or Arrestor
I do not wish to colour/color anyone’s arguement/argument as to whether it is –er or -or
On checking different encyclopaedia/encyclopedia, one gets a catalogue/catalog of differing opinions.
One simply has to use one’s own judgement/judgment.
You say potato I say potatoe.

Like all humans, my brain is composed of two halves, however ...
The left side has nothing right with it, and the right side has nothing left in it.
