This is an up to date version in a way as that date is well past the Vista 'Normal' date.

I said straight away XP...I was surprised it was XP pro......not because I personally have anything to say about Vista except I hear of various problem where I know I can handle the XP for what she wants and it will do all that she needs it for.

Just taking the easy option.......I really can't see what all the extra 'weight' of Vista would give her.

Another plus was it has Nortons pre loaded and they asked if we wanted to pay to have it activated.......it was declined and uninstalled first thing and replaced by AVG free. It used to be that Nortons was installed and paid for like it of not.

So she was happy not that she knew what was what but since I am the one having to set it up and show her how to use it, I feel happier with this.

Perhaps retailers are really responding to true market demands :think:

from a number of articles/comments at theregister.co.uk it would seem retailers are more than happy to install XP rather than Vista to the extent MS have had to extend the out of service date for XP a number of times. To some extent this is now less a reflection on Vista than public perception of it, plus some of the lower spec machines being sold probably aren't really up to the full Vista experience.

As you mention the lower specs not being up to it supports what I was thinking in that the full blown Vista is lost on that sort of machine and use whereas XP does everything she is ever going to want..

Good that Microsoft is going along with it as at the end of the day a sale is a sale and more expansion get bought for machines that the user is happy with wether or not any problems are genuine or percieved.

I really can't say about Vista as I have never used it but based on general comment, in this case, I was happy to stick with XP.

Now....if I was looking for a machine for me, which I would want to run FS.X and beyond..... then it would be a case of Vista and any problems.....well, find a way arround them.

A lot, if not most of what I see reported are just users trying to use Vista as if it was XP........the difficulties are more of a nuisance rather than anything insurmountable.

Nice to have the choice.........that is what impressed me

Hi Garry, there is a lot in what you say... most of us "getting on a bit" have grown up with DOS and various incarnations of Windows, pretty much all of which we could hack pretty much any way that we wanted. With Vista, and unless you happen to be a super wiz bang hacker, this is no longer possible. The thing is it is probably no longer necessary to be able to get at the guts of Vista (at least with SP1) the way we used to but I suspect that some of us miss the feeling of being in control and doing pretty much what we wanted.

This is day 3 now of Vista and with 5 people using the same machine all with varying degrees of permission and so far no one has complained (at least not to me!). So far so good (I need a crossed fingers icon).

Hmmm.....Vista seems stable on my rig.....but....and a very big but is.....would my new GPU card work better with XP or is it better under Vista....? its a true DX10 card...

I have had no issues since very early user error issues with Vista and can now say i am truly happy with it.....

Anyone have a full version of XP 32 or 64 bit with the proper OEM that they want to flog so i can do some comparisons...?

I think Chris has hit the nail on the head as far as I am concerned, started off with DOS then progressed to Windows 3.1 eventually leading to XP, I like to have a bit of control over Windows, not to say that it cannot be done with Vista but I am now getting to the age where even setting up a top box along with the others things to connect to the TV is becoming a little too technical!! If you have to be a complete wiz bang hacker for Vista......... then I'm doooooomed !! :brick:

Hey I started on an Apple II+ and upgraded to the IIe. That was the ultimate machine for hacking - so easy to get into the guts of the machine. I even learnt some assembly language on it. With each incarnation of Windows, I have become less confident in tinkering around. I am not blaming Microsoft - just increasingly advanced years on my part.
