Hi Dave He would have been there unless he left before 1960. I Joined Christmas 59/60 and the plant closed in 1964.He may remember my father who was the ganger on the Argosy tail booms.

Ooo.. tks for that George ;-)

Baginton is where he hails from and his folks still live there so I guess Armstrong Whitworth would have been the natural choice for him. We may have another on the Vanguard team who was there too. Can't b1oody remember now :brick: I'm not due to see him for a fortnight (or was that a week) as he goes in on Sat and I go in on Wed so I'll email him first.. if I remember

Hi Tony.
Thanks for the welcome and the pics.To what standard has the Vanguard been restored?is it flying?.
I was tempted to get involved in the restoration of the Vulcan at Bruntingthorpe which is'nt that far from where I live, but you know how it is, I could'nt find the time as I am self employed now,but to be honest I never thought they could do it.Well hats off to them eh.And to think that when the Vulcans were scrapped we still had to complete the contract so they were refurbished including all the latest mods, flight tested, snaged, then flown to scampton,i believe, and then cut up.Does make you wonder about our illustrious leaders dos'nt it :doho: .

Hi George

The Vanguard has not been restored but maintained as best as can be....that is, it is not a rebuild of a hulk. :)

There is no runway there at all now but there was in 1996 and it flew in.

Donated in fully working condition they have kept it as active as possible.

For years it was taxiied arround on certain published days but after the last round of developements the remains of the runway and taxyway were lost :-( and now she sits permanently parked but now and then still has her engines run for the enjoyment of all. :tunes:

Hi George :)

The Vanguard isn't being restored mate.. quite the opposite really. We do what we can to stop it rotting away

APEP 'Superb' was donated to the museum by Hunting when it finished it's working life and was flown into Brooklands 12 years ago.. the shot in my signature shows that moment. The team have kept it in running condition rather than let it fade into the all too familiar 'cold and dark' state that most museum pieces end up in. Truth to tell.. I don't think anyone expected it to still be going after all these years!!
Prior to Mercedes Benz World buying the old Vickers/BAC airfield and developing it into their UK HQ, engine runs were quite a regular occurance and every now and again, she'd do a taxi up and down the runway. However, when the redevelopment started.. Superb and A4O-AB (the Sultan of Oman's private VC10) had to move off the airfield into the museum area (the old car park surrounded by trees!) and this is where they both live along with a Varsity T1 and Viscount APIM (which has just celebrated it's 50th birthday). Superb is completely out of compliance and will never fly again but our aim is to keep her 'live' for as long as possible ;-)
