I built up a habbit of never pressing the tit without glancing down at my kneepad, it became a sort of involantary reaction. God help me if I smudged the chinagraph, because I have a brain like sieve!

I have some good callsigns.......hate it when i get called on the radio though......I usually answer with the affirmative word........ends with "off"
"Whiskey Sierra 51" "Whiskey Sierra 46" "and Bravo 347"
I would love to answer with "Foxtrot Oscar"

In the US, it's the same way for assigning the callsigns for the Air Force & Air National Guard ("fixed" tactical callsign - first number for day of week, second for sortie of day). The Army uses just "Army" and a derivative of the aircraft's serial number for the most part, as does the Coast Guard and the Civil Air Patrol. What really gets confusing is that the Navy and Marine Corps still use a 4-letter ICAO format to identify their flights with a 3-number aircraft code behind it and then call on the radio with their tactical call instead of by the letters or "Navy".
For example, a radar datablock of VVNH401 would be an aircraft assigned to Navy (VV), Carrier Air Wing 11(NH), squadron 4 (VFA-81), 01 (aircraft #1 in the squadron). The side of the aircraft (an F/A-18C) would have "401" on the nose and tail. However, when he calls ATC, he'd check in as "ZAPPER 401". Makes things really confusing if you're not used to it.

As ex ATC Chris...i used to love talking to the RAF pilots with their callsigns......made my day.....
American Military A/C entering this country have a different system they have to use to come through UK Airspace.... ;-)

I would never have thought, all the times I've been at Leuchars and kept the camera lowered, thinking 'Not another bl**dy Tornado' - that I would now be seriously cheesed that I did not take more photos.
Unbelievably, there is no mention of a specific F3 display on the Leuchars website for this year! :o

Not sure if they still do 'local' displays but as far as I know.. the F3 was withdrawn as the Tornado display aircraft. Whether this means the GR's now take the weight or if the Tonka has been pulled in favour of the Typhoon I honestly don't know.
