I find it strange that you are sticking with a product where the previous version failed to find all of these problems. Surely this indicates what has be suggested for a long time, i.e. AVG is well below par.

I get the free bit Garry, I really do but even if you wanted to stick with free, would it not be an idea to try AVAST? Unless your computer literate, and some, a virus can have you tearing your hair out for days, and you may even need to get someone to fix it which would cost you more than the £30 or so that a proper AV package would cost.

The last product I saw that had so hopelessly failed to discover that many problems was Norton in 1997, needless to say anyone who pays for norton should have their head looked at.

Did full scan with AVG and it appeared to find a whole lotta stuff ADAWARE - SPYWARE but fortunately no viruses. having read Tony Madges' account with AVG and of Bens' remarks I wonder if I should change to AVAST!! :dunno:

Should I take that option then whatever AVG has found, should I send the files back to their original location just in case one of them is a programme file, install AVAST, then do a complete scan?

Ben, do you consider AVAST to be more reliable?

Nigel.

To be honnest Nigel, I wouldn't touch either, but given that Tony has just discovered a whole load of something that was missed by the last version of AVG, I would have thought trying something else would be a good idea. As a general rule, make sure you uninstall an old AV product and reboot before installong a new one.

As both AVG and AVAST are free it won't cost anything to try it. :)

Hi Ben

I ran my Tojan remover and AVG7 this afternoon again as I am having so much trouble with the computer running slow and being short of memory

All said clean

Then I installed AVG8 and am part way through the scan

Almost immediatly it reported downloaders, several Trojans including Zlob and dozens and dozens of other nasties.

I did try AVAST a while back when I started getting this trouble but like AVG it reported the machine was clean so I could not see that is was better :dunno:

One of the nasties I have disbles anti virus software from seeing certain viruses.

Anyway until this afternoon my machine was said to be clean....now it is showing it's full story

Not been able to shut down for months, have had inernet breaks, complete drop offs and my 1.1 MB connection is at times giving me 10-15 KPS.

Took over four hours to download a file the other day

I have had to shut windows down to cut and paste because the machine didn't have enough memory and most of the time was running at 100 per cent

I should see an improvement now I hope.

Seems like a result :)

Garry

Thanks Ben, but after reading Garrys' post I may just keep with AVG for now and give it time to prove itself. One can often be put off something by some-ones experiences but after thinking about Tonys' post I wonder if it is possible for AVG to report a file as a risk if it wasn't? :dunno:

Everything that this new AVG found on my computer has been put into the vault which are kept for thirty days before being deleted therefore should a file need restoring to its' original location you can.

Garry, be interesting to hear whether there is an actual improvement on your system now.

Regards
Nigel.

AVG8 also found Adware/Spyware on my machine. I assume that this is because the previous version didn't include any anti-spyware.
The other free software that I run is Spybot Search and destroy, which will imunise your PC against threats.
If you want that, it can be found here

http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

I do however find it's 'TeaTimer' facilty a bit confusing. In fact I had recently uninstalled Spybot (intending to re-install it), which may explain the spyware found by AVG.
