Is that a comet on the ramp under you there Peter? Looks like one, but the nose looks longer.

Techy..

Taking into consideration the date of Peter's shots (Sep 1960) and the fact that the Nimrod didn't start development until '64 (first flew '67).. I'd say it's a fair bet it's a Comet ;-) The RAF had Comet 2's up until '67 or thereabouts so it might be one of theirs :dunno:

It does look like it has the AEW3 bump on the nose but I reckon that's probably a mark on the ground or something parked up close rather than it being attached to the aircraft ;-)

I'm pretty sure that is a BOAC Comet 4...Definitely not an RAF Comet. BOAC were in and out of Embakazi airport all the time...They also had a special little hangar there, called a "Nose Hangar". I remember when our Engineer Officer, Paddy Thompson, went off to Aden in the "Advance Party" of a detachment, he left me in charge of getting the Hunters ready. I had to hire that BOAC Nose Hanger to do an engine change on one of the Hunters...That involves splitting the Hunter into two halves (front and back). I worked with the chaps right through the night to change the engine and then nipped off home to my flat in Nairobi to get my gear packed, woof down down breakfast, then back to the airport in time to fly that Hunter to Aden with the others...Group Captain Joel (Station Commander at Eastleigh) came over to the airport to see us off. He took our squadron Boss to one side and said "I don't think McLeland has shaved this morning!" The Boss didn't dare tell him that I had been up all night changing an engine
