I used to be an optimist but with age I am now a grumpy old pessimist.

Oooh! Even I'm interested in this even though I'm not a scenery person. Although I was based at Heathrow in the 70s we spent a lot of time in Manchester as we had several transatlantic originators and all the long-haul aircraft were crewed by LHR base. Sometimes we would position in a Trident or 1-11 and sometimes we would ferry an empty aircraft. And we also operated back-to-back Atlantic flights with a nightstop in the Grand Hotel.

So yes, this could become my home base and I could base my DM fleet there.

I wouldn't know where to start with AI, though. Perhaps there is a talented member who could cobble a basic package together - or at least compile an idiot's guide to setting up the AI without having to take early retirement :dunno:

Anyway - this looks fantastic David. Congratulations.

Ian :)

Be very careful with AI Ian. Once you start dabbling, you'll find you've become a spotter not a pilot  It's very addictive ;-)

Too true Dave. Spend hours watching instead of flying.

I wouldn't want that to happen! :$ I've got enough personality problems as it is

But seeing all that activity and all the meeters-and-greeters seeing off the bucket-and-spaders makes it feel just like it used to (on the odd day when it didn't rain! I think that was July 18th 1975, but I expect there is a commemorative plaque somewhere in Manchester if it hasn't rusted away  ). Which reminds me of a T-shirt I once saw in Seattle. The Pacific NorthWest has a similar climate to Manchester and is similarly famous for it. The T-shirt read: Seattle - 360 days of rain and a few weirdos. Sums it up perfectly :worried:

I still don't share DM's love of that horrid redwhiteandblue livery and in 1975 I'm sure there were still plenty of the classic and hybrid paintjobs about to make the scene easier on the eye. Perhaps one day, when the world slows down a bit, I shall have to learn about AI to fix things to how I would like to remember them :doho:

Ian :)

Hi David,

Would you be interested (once it's all done and released) to help with an early 60's version? It could be as simple as removing the 70's bits from the terminal (just the parts easily removed is fine) and the 70's buildings, and letting us edit the AFCAD, etc. Or we could get as fancy as you feel. :)

Thanks for considering it,
Tom Gibson

That takes me back, when I was little, we were SO poor that my birthday present used to be a day at Manchester Ringway on the observation deck, or to watch our grandparents coming back from the Costas on a Britannia 737-200, yes wearing sombreros and clutching little stuffed donkeys, our van would be like a smokebox on the way back to St.Helens as they ripped into their duty free fags.
