Yes, putting P3D on the separate and larger SSD is the way to go. Most other things will successfully find your bespoke P3D location thanks to the registry. Others can just be pointed to the location, as you rightly suggest.

Two questions (which may be superflous if you've already parted with cash and the deal is done):

1) What GPU did you go for? An nVidia 1000-series GTX is my recommendation... Which one? Basically the most expensive you can possibly afford to shell out for. The 1080 or even 1080ti if you possibly can.

2) Is your CPU unlocked and therefore overclockable? Overclocking is simple enough and can give you great performance increases.

The CPU is overclockable but I haven't requested that it is overclocked. I wanted to see how it performs before overclocking.

From the nVidia forums:

"Just a marketing gimmick, it's supposed to stand for Titanium since Ti is the atomic symbol for Titanium. It was originally used back in the GeForce 2/3/4 days to differentiate the class of cards, sorta like the GT/GTS/GTX used in current Nvidia cards. I guess Nvidia's marketing department considered the Ti moniker "cool" so they brought it back"

TBH they might as well have used a + symbol instead (e.g. 1080+). With the latest round of 1000 series cards it is used to differentiate those with "extra", which in the case of the 1080 means 11Gb VRAM rather than the standard 8Gb. I pushed the boat out for a 1080ti in an attempt to future-proof for the next generation of higher resolution VR headsets, which will be a "must buy" for me.

What sort of improvement are you getting with PreParV4 and FSX. Presumably your FPS is very high and flight very smooth? (at least that's what I'm aiming for).

I don't see any significant improvement in FPS, although my settings are much higher, so I'm not comparing like with like. Its definitely smoother though. I do sometimes get a stutter, but it seems to be caused by the audio, which may be because the new sim is 64 bit and many of the old sounds might be using the old 32 bit dll.
