Tricky one there. One Spotter interpreted the dive brakes as propellor blades, and voted for a Dornier 212, nice thinking, but no badge for that, I'm sorry to say.
Dornier 217 with dive brakes deployed got diamond badges for:
Brian (Bridon Bear) and Mick (woody901)

Well done both of you, and thanks to everyone who had a look anyway.

There were two shots in the book, slightly different positions of the brakes:

Mike, good job on the obfuscation of the 217, I admit I thought the dive brake on the back was a propeller so I was stumped. Even now knowing what it was I could not find any pics of the 217 with the dive brake deployed.

Joe (blanston12) put in some effort, looking closely at details, but didn't pick up the straight panel lines, indicating the in-line engine, and went for the P 36, whose radial affected the panel lines back to the windscreen. Silver for Joe:

Mike what version of the P-40 was that. I though it was a P-36 because of the lack of mirror on the canopy and absence of gun ports on the wings. I do admit I did do some research on your hint but was going in the wrong direction with it. But then again, I knew it was either a P-36 or a P-40 and you said my guess of P-36 was wrong so, by a process of elimination I should have been able to pick it.

Hi Joe,
The page is headed P-40E Kittyhawk II and P-40F Kittyhawk III (Warhawk I)
The photo is captioned Photo by courtesy of Keystone Press, with no further details. There are no insignia or numbers visible, and no indication of location. The leading edge of the wing appears to have been blurred, so no gun barrels are visible.
Oddly, the next page is a line drawing with a mirror. I have looked at a heap of P-40 photos, and it seems that lots are without mirrors. I have read, in the past, that individual Hurricane and Spitfire pilots chose to remove mirrors for the sake of extra speed.
The text includes "Compared with the Tomahawk series the Kittyhawk differs mainly in the motor installation, armament layout and cockpit design".
