Hi Paul...I put up the raw link a while ago as it is really one worth keeping in you favourites as it get updated quite often.

My favourite is the Bristol Freighter still sitting in the corner of a lake after crashing 50 years before.

Yes, thats quite incredible; it went through the ice and was then recovered and dragged ashore.

What I wouldn't give for a new FS9 Biffo.

Ive been fortunate enough over the years to meet some hump pilots, and new a couple of the guys at Challenge who flew them.

flying the model I found things that they remarked on about the C46 to be true

1/. Its laterally unstable - tends to yaw if the engines are not sync'd - Which of course if not corrected leads to roll etc etc (hello trees, hello flowers, hello grass)

2/. you do NOT let it get slow on the approach especially after the first flap setting and gear is down - I had to use max power to correct the rate of sink.

3/. It climbs like a tired crow - especially at weights approaching MTOW

4. HOWEVER - Once you have it in cruise and on the step and the power set correctly it will motor along faster than a DC3 (I saw 175 KIAS at 2800
squared)

Im assuming the guys at CalClassic did theyre sums correctly and have produced as far as is possible in FS an accurate flight model

In its defence I can see how those who mastered the real thing preferred flying it to the DC3/C47 - the visibilty from the cockpit is far superior, the pure bulk of the aircraft would have made it very stable in turbulent air
and it would appear from the wide stance of the main gear that it is a lot easier to handle on the ground , I think a lot of people make the comparison with the C47 a little unfairly - The C46 was a much larger aircraft and as it was originally planned to be pressurised a more complex aircraft.

Leif

Sorry, didnt mean to make it a Lecture
Not at all. When it comes to FS9 I need lectures!

I'm going to spend some time with the C-46 and get to know it, but I do agree with you on the climb rate. Also I've noticed the roll rate is pretty blech, even for a tubby transport. Still, if thats the way it was, then fine by me.

I'm getting a really nice collection of twins together now, what with Rick's HS748 and Varsity, the MAAM C-47, Del P's Dove, Dave G's Rapide, and now this most welcome addition.

That Glacier Bay scenery add-on is excellent too, by the way.

It's not what I'd call my type of aircraft, but it's too nice a model not to fly! I have to say, I've taken a shine to the USAAF model.

Well done to all involved.

Heh, just been flying up in Alaska with FSCargo. Shes a bit of a brick but once your on the cruise shes rather quick. I dont like the vc and the 2d panel is acceptable but Im sure I will have lots of fun in her for a while :)

I'm not keen on this particular VC either ( I've installed the crew-less one ), but I'll use it in the cruise when I haven't got anything critical to do.
