FSX settings advice please??

Having just got opperational again this weekend, I have to say FSX is running well here. Most of my issues stem from most of the utilities I used in FS9, which are still in the process of being updated.
Most of these relate to AI, namely Traffictools, Afcad, editvoicepack etc, but, most of my old traffic works so I'm happy with that. Some of the tims above made a huge difference, in particular...
Texture Bandwidth Mult
Find the line that reads
TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULT=40
And change it to
TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULT=400
This will make texture load in while flying go much faster.
Buffer Pools
Add the following section and line to the end of the cfg file
[BufferPools]
PoolSize=5000000
But this is only regommend for Graphics cards with more than 256MB
Admittedly I did spend a fair wack last month on my new PC, but I'm especially happy with my Geforce 8800 GTX

Hi Folks
I'd gotten two entirely different PDFs mixed up.
I'd intended to refer you to - FSX Tweak Guide
Which is a far more helpful one.
It was the recent BBG update announcement on AVSIM, that prompted my post.
PS
To avoid misdirecting anyone else
I've corrected the link in my initial post.

Thanks Paul for this.
Ben I did the tweaks but not the buffer pool one I only have a 128mb 6600GT card well two of them..wonder if FSX does SLI??
Sl4yer if i could get it stutter free i would love to VFR in the uk
calypsos, funny how the pro FSX brigade have gone very quiet
i agree it stutters like a stuttering thing! I found that it performs better in VC mode and did a flight from Jersey to Guernsey but upon landing I had a huge stutter that lasted 10 secs... then once the hard drive shut up it worked again... It seems to be so rescouce hungry it is pulling on the hard disc all the time!!
Sorry this is first class shyte..I can say that cause I bought it

A nice review here: http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2006/11/08 ... _8800_gtx/
Its the mutts nuts of a card, but FSX doesn't really push it (due to the way the engine works) I went for the Palit one. Its actually made for nvidia directly and was the second least expensive.
Been playing about with my cores on the cpu. try to set everything to use any of the first 3 and leave FSX the 4th one to itself. Particularly handy with flynet.

Ok this is where I am at...
I installed the VFR scenery just south and Midlands as it takes ages
Tried a little flight, the scenery is excellent much better than the 2004 crap. My landings are better in FSX. I can land and stop on a sixpence thats because as soon as the wheel hit terra firma FSX freezes ...long enough for me to pop down the pub have a 3 course meal 18 pints then fight with another drunk...
I today changed all the settings to what Horizon suggest then had a brain wave...I have an SLI system with two GT6600 128Mb cards, why not use them??? So I did that ok lost the one monitor...but thats a SLI problem, tried FSX and bingo not only am I around the 50fps its smoother ( still not perfect a bit jumpy) my landings are back to normal...crash bang wallop... I find that FSX runs in 2D cockpit now where before that was out of the question. However I think FSX is better in VC mode..Arrrggghhh what am I saying
I reckon you need at least a256mb video card in the realms of 8800 series anything less and it's hard work..
Now I can run it I have decided I will use it only for VFR flying in the UK I prefer FS9 for normal day to day use as its more stable and performance wise better. The plus points for FSX
1: Horizon blend is better
2: Water textures better
3: The ability to save various CFG settings
4: Horizon VFR scenery brilliant
5: great to follow cars and trucks on the motorway!! (I just can't leave work behind)
Downsides.
1: Sky textures are crap
2: Clouds are crap
3: sliders ...too many of them you can spend a week tweaking..a sign of a badly planned sim...
4: poor compatability with anything from FS9
5: not ready a rushed product with promise but too many faults.
6:Menus are confusing and messy
7: desperately needs that patch NOW...
So I can say my opinion is not different but I can use the bloody thing now. However a warning to all DO NOT DUMP FS9 this is still a better sim..
I do hope that patch is worth the wait

The best answer for me is just not to go there
FS9.1 is for me as good as it gets

Peter I fully agree with you I just wanted to post about how hard it is to get it running with any sign of performance. I fear that others with less knowledge than the guys and girls here would be put off FS altogether should they leap in and buy FSX.
I just took FS9.1 out for a spin after my foray with FSX and it was like meeting an old friend... so much more comfortable and relaxing, you know exactly where your at.
I would guess switching to FSX is a bit like getting back into the dating scene again all that bloody effort when you can't be really bothered anymore and then you realise you were better off with what you had anyway!! lipgloss and splish splash on the face are only there to hide the cracks..sounds like FSX to me

Sorry for bringing old threads back to live, but I suddenly remembered this particular line.....
A similar setup here in Denmark is found around 1500 £ so I'm saving up for it....
Did you purchase a Quad?....uhhh it must an ugly s.o.a.b. machine you have now....Ben Watson wrote:Been playing about with my cores on the cpu. try to set everything to use any of the first 3 and leave FSX the 4th one to itself
