it may be worth waiting for the new DirectX10 compatible cards
Only if you are running Vista

Ah well, I did the 'Vista-readiness' check (which crashed my pc twice) and the results are not encouraging. I'll stick with XP for a while!

Overclocking the CPU might be another option, but I've nae idea how to do that!

Overclocking is quite straight forward and can give some excellent results.
Allways some satisfaction in having a cheap CPU outperforming ones that cost twice as much.
There are some good guides that can be found with google.

I might try that, but tosave me looking: can overclocking be done with software or does it require getting the screwdrivers from the garage?

It's all done from software - no need for screwdrivers. Tweaking the setup in the BIOS.

But perhaps if you didn't know that and don't want a knackered system, don't go there.

Unless someone can reassure you that it won't all end in tears.

At least you have a working system at the moment.

oh, that all sounds way too scary. I'll get some memory first (i can get another 1gb for < 120euro) so I'll see where that takes me.

thanks agaon for the replies. I must say, this is the most responsive forums i've ever had the pleasure to subscribe to.

I had a 1300 card on a similar system, stuck in a 1650 pro I saw in the sales and she is brilliant in FS9.

I've just been having a look on the internet and figure I can get an extra 1gb ram and a nice Athlon 64 X2 4800+ (which is the most CPU power my PC can support) for less than 300euro. Not bad really - with that kind of processing power I should at least get some better fps in FS9 (and probably a whole lot of other things too but who cares if excel runs any quicker, right?) :wink:

Ah yes, this old chestnut again. So here I am a few months later and with some money to burn.

Here's my aim: to get the Captain Sim 757/LevelD 767 from a shocking FPS (<= 8fps) to a good framerate (ie >=26fps)

Given my system spec (see start of thread) and your experience, should I

1 - get the AMD x2 4800+ CPU and add an additional 1gb ram or;
2 - 1gb ram + ATI 1650 graphics card (512mb) or;
3 - CPU + ATI 1650 graphics card (512mb)

:think:

I've decided not to bother with the CPU - ok, so the pc will run a lot faster, but FS9 doesn't support dual core anyway, so there's not much return there.

I've bought an additional 2gb ram (cost me just over 100 quid) and I'm going to buy a new graphics card instead.

I'm thinking of the Radeon™ X1950 XTX. Does anyone have any experience with this card, and could recommend me a decent card with similar performance .v. price metrics.

cheers, one day i'll stop going on about this and get on with the flying!
