Yes, any of those cards would probably handle whatever your system will throw at it.
The CPU will probably be the bottleneck after upgrade.

The only other thing to help decide is the make of the graphics card.
I'd avoid BFG, not sure if XFX was the other one that had a few negative comments when I was looking.
Whatever you decide, type it in a search engine & see if there are any horror stories to put you off.
ATI usually have better drivers, so if the X1600 is similar spec to a 7600GT, that could also be something to think about.

Another vote for the yoke here too.

Thanks again, for your kind words here..

But Garry and David NO Yoke here...

Num Pad Off, and '0' and 'NUM-ENTER' does the trick

A good rule: 'kiss'

Well, in a direct comparison between these two cards ATI didn't stand a chance....

A prime factor is also that the ATI card is considered pretty noisy as to the nVidia which is more or less noiseless...

(I know that the ATI is noisy as my current is..)

I asked a similar question not long ago after my X800XT died on me.

A 7800GS was recommended and I am very impressed with it.
