What gets me though is if I turn off the RRW which is set by default...it still keeps trying to connect

Lack of RRW is something and nothing, but failure to be able to cancel is very annoying to say the least :curse:

Intriguing - mine doesn't try to connect unless I ask it to. Something
deep down in the configuration, I guess.

I didn't think I'd miss something like this so much. Having got used to it,
I just don't fancy flying in "no weather" or a contrived weather
situation. Mind you, looking out of the window here (I do have to
remind myself to do this occasionally) it is beautiful weather out
there - bright sunshine and not a cloud in the sky.

There's plenty thay can do - Uninterruptable Power Supplies,
Backup Generators etc. and Microsoft of all people like us to think they
lead the field on that front.

I have no idea whether FS X uses the same server, my comment was
hardly intended to be serious.

FSX and FS9 use the same weather server. The only difference is that FSX can process more weather stations than FS9. But it's the power situation there that's the issue. Seattle has major power outages and it will be several more days at least before all power is restored. Once the power comes back, the server feed should resume. It's out of Microsoft's hands because only the power company can fix the problem. No amount of money will get them to go faster (as much as some politicians would like to believe).

I remember having the same problem some time back and decided to see what else was available.

Tried FS Metar (freeware) and never looked back. Seems much more reliable and provides much improved weather (in my opinion) than the default.

If you get flashing on the screen, disable Render to Texture.

I have to second FSMetar.exe as the primary choice when using an external weather engine.

Not had any problems whatsoever from day 1, highly recommendable. And for a very nice price as well.
