Oddly enough I have found its fairly easy to navigate avsim.ru on account of having studied engineering (which uses the Greek alphabet). The Cyrillic alphabet, as its name suggests was devised by a Greek called Cyril! Consequently, a lot of the letters are very similar to Greek ones.
When John / Calpyso finds this thread, he'll probably be able to post direct links to all the best stuff. Project Tupolev's Tu-154B-2 & Tu-154M are especially good.
As far as translation goes, bare in mind that you translate by sound rather than purely by character. For example "Yakovlev" is written "Яковлев" where the "Я" is actually not a single character but the sound "ya".
I agree my post about 1 to 1 translation was simplistic, but the various ch, tsch sounds amongst others are not the easiest to explain - these are mostly non Arabic characters and hence "strange" anyway.
