People are often stupid enough to give it.

So easy to forget in the comfort of you own home that the friendly PC represents real danger....or at least potential danger

Hi Garry,

Yes I suppose people get into a comfort zone and relax when in their forum environments.

Is it possible to locate someone from IP addresses?

The Authorities manage it so there is a way but I don't know for Joe public

It is surprising how much people will give away in ordinary conversation often in bits no realising how much of a complete picture is building.

Yes. You can get programs (there are some online ones) which allow you to trace IPs in a similar way as is graphically displayed in the film "Goldeneye" Basically, as it works out the path of servers and connections through which data from that IP is coming I think. I know someone who has such a program and has managed to trace forum-trolls down to within a street or two. Doesnt always work though, sometimes it cuts out before the IP can be fully determined, sometimes you have multiple users behind the same router or something like that.

We use a program here to monitor stats of visitors. It works out the country of origin from the IP address, but beyond that it can be tricky. I'f I use the microsoft locater program when I'm at home it knows I'm in Edinburgh, but at work, It thinks I'm in the North East, as thats where our external net connection is. In short, Its good for working out countries, but not good beyond that.
