"You get what you pay for?"
CB, did you just forget that people pay for Norton!?
I seem to remember you reviewed it recently for one of our forum members. :gigle:

Dave, I only use AVG because it always rated highly in 'PC Plus' magazine when I was first looking at AV stuff.
I don't know much about AV, but if PC Plus recommend a free product it's got to be good, unlike the 'paid for' top place that Norton used to get.
To be fair, they now recommend Avast instead, but AVG still rates ok.

The way I look at it is this.
The worst AV program is one that isn't working properly because of some unseen problem.
Installing & uninstalling different software is the best way to screw your system, so changing AV could be more dangerous than sticking with the second or third best program.
I mean, how many of us would really know if our AV/Firewall is running perfectly or not?

Sorry to hear you're having problems Rick.
I'd have uninstalled McAfee for that kind of behaviour as well. Why do they think it's acceptable? :dunno:
Norton (pre installed) screwed my system as well when it was removed using their own uninstall option.
Fortunately a System Restore did fix mine.
Hope you can get it sorted.

I had McAfee firewall some time back and binned it. It kept telling me that there was an update available, downloaded it OK, and then it told me there was a further update - no joy EVER with downloading it - error messages all over the place. Like Rick, I was at the stage of banging my head against the nearest wall.

I now run ZoneAlarm Pro firewall and AVG 7 Professional AV.

Right this is mostly for Chris

windows update brings up a blank white screen.

Java does not work even though it's switched on.

None of the buttons here when posting do anything at all in the message window, same for the emoticons to the left just nothing when clicked apart from seeing that they flash when clicked so i know windows has acknowledged the click.

Any ideas Chris.

I have Avast installed no problem and Registry Mechanic which said it found 100s of problems but after spending £20 on it and all the problems being fixd i still have the same problems.

Rick

Rick,

I'm really not sure. It sounds very much like Mcafee has screwed something up as it departed your system.

Hows about uninstalling Avast and reinstalling Mcafee just to see if it goes back to normal?

Rick,

Have you searched the Mcafee website for a guide to un-installing? I got rid of Norton AV a few years ago and while I don't have many kind words to say about Norton, they did provide a very thorough guide to uninstalling it on their website. Involved a lot of registry editing to clean everything out, and some manual deletions of leftover files and folders.

Since that time I have used Avast and have had no problems whatsoever, and when it was first installed it found a few problems that Norton had missed.
