I think they were acquired by Matchbox. Some of the Matchbox cars I had when I was growing up had Matchbox-Lesney printed underneath.

Lesney introduced a range of small models (Matchbox)

I loved the early boxes that were made tpo look like matchboxes.

Ah that makes more sense Garry... I was just putting 2 and 2 together since Matchbox was the more well known name.

Matchbox was just a product range of small models that would fit an a matchbox...so the name came about.
I think the matchboxes had to be a little bigger  but it meant cute little boxes at a time when such things were a little sparse.
So it was an easy identifiable range

I think Mr V, the Matchbox you remember as a kid (not really that long ago) were a tad different from what Garry and I were used to in the 60's
Who mentioned stick-on spokes?? Yeh but I wasn't that struck to be honest as they made the wheels look egg shaped when being 'driven' unless they were bang-on!!
If anyone pop's up to Whitby, there's a nice toy museum showing many of the cars/lorries I had in the window  Was it Corgi or Spot-On that made the Cadillac ambulance with flashing light?? I seem to remember an AA battery fitted underneath and the light worked off a cam that made contact between the lamp on the roof and the battery

Corgi - my sister had it!
On the subject of Matchbox, I saw program on TV a while ago that said Matchbox came about because Mr Lesney (or his children) were only allowed to take to school, toys that fitted into matchbox. An idea was born

Well I think the oldest-designed ones I had were dated in the mid to late 70s, but no, nothing as early as 60s....

Little dark blue window boxes with a thin lighter blue check pattern from what I can remember.

I only looked in this thread out of interest, then I stumbled across the link to this site:

I happen to have two models from there, still.

Would it be worth retrieving them from the loft?
Dan.
