Thats very true, quite often a nice bit of flying on TV is marred by rather poor 'rock music' soundtrack. Of course if it were music that I actually liked I wouldnt notice so much

I read, when they used a C.1 as a testbed for a new RR engine, for the Tristar I think, (new fan engine on Port side, pair of Conways starboard) that there was slightly more power from the two Conways, and I've just seen on another forum, talking about the Red Arrows programme, that the Super could fly at Mach 0.94. So it may well be the fastest (subsonically)

Toby, I seem to remember you saying the Trident was the fastest subsonic Airliner....?

I think he also had the disadvantage of never having properly flown the Hawk either. I get the feeling, after he said he'd been in for four years, that he was one of the RNZAF fast jet refugees. They came over about 2001-2002 IIRC...

The most surprising thing in the program was the presenter 'staying with it' during the manouvres flying with R1. (Unlike a certain J Clarkson in the F16 a while back!)

JC was in an F-15 (unless he's done the F-16 too?). Yes I was quite impressed. I assumed that a man would be able to better cope with G forces than a woman, but that probably depends on whether you're in better shape than Clarkson or not

They did only show her going up to about 4G though IIRC. I don't think R1 pulls much more than that in the whole display. I don't know if she had a G-suit on - Red Arrows pax normally don't...

I agree...Probably as little as 3G maximum...She wasn't wearing a G-suit. A G-suit is not really necessary for formation aerobatics but they do cut down the fatigue a great deal and the Reds wear them for that as they do a lot of flying. It think the Pair do "Snap" some pretty high G numbers in some of their manoeuvres and the other chaps also pull more Gs while positioning to reform after "Bombshells".

BTW...I watched them on Saturday at the Regatta here

Clarkson was in my opinion subjected to dangerously high G and could have been seriously injured when his head fell right back.

Perhaps he was being his usual nauseating self and upset the pilot

Perhaps the pilot was a keen caravanner... or drove a Chevrolet Corvette
