Suppose that it is possible when Vista finished so did MSE?
Something like that I reckon. MSE worked for XP too but support stopped when support for XP stopped so I had to get something else.. as it happens, Avast!! It probably stops bugs ok (for what little time that rig is online) but it seems to spend a lot of time telling me I'm short of disk space and how I could speed everything up if I bought the payware version. I find this terribly annoying

No idea why I don't have Defender but I DO have MSE on the Win7 rig? Probably my fault

Just another way to hard sell their products Dave (usually by getting people like me to fall for that hype)

BTW, just finding out how much better and quicker it is on the internet now compared to when I used to frequent the public library, think the problem lays with the fact that the IT Section do not keep the browsers fully up to date as I could not even upload to YouTube..........but now....................wheeeeeeeeeee!!! :excited:

Just one further question I need to ask and that is when you down load a program or even say scenery/aircraft/add-on when I had anti-virus I used to check them before installing, when I save anything like this to my download folder before installing how do I check for viruses or is that done automatically by Defender as you download?

Sorry about this question but just wondering.

Nigel.

Just to throw a spanner in the works......
Our two laptops run W10, & having got used to it we find it loads a lot quicker than the previously installed w7, possibly because of all the updates that are loaded in the system, but I think its a 32 bit program(?) as opposed to W10 being 64bit(?).
I know one can't stop the M$ updates but I've got used to that now.
As I had the payware AVG internet security - been using it for years after having the legal right to use the company Sophos, & picked up one of those early viruses where it would appear that the free AVG would identify, but not clean up, I went to the payware where it will clean them up & get direct assistance if needed.
My Desktop runs a professional W8.1 & did have a payware Sophos until the licence ran out, so I now have the freeware Sophos Home, which to me seems very unobtrusive & will warn if a potential nasty is encountered on that website.
Defender still downloads updates & I have been assured that its as good as most of the other free & some payware ones, but I'm a bit of a stick in the mud I suppose on that score!
All three also use Opera as the browser & it has an Advert blocker which can be useful especially if one does not have good broadband speed - our varies between 1/2 to 1 meg being on 6 Km of copper from the exchange.
It does sound as if you have good broadband speed if Youtube goes weeeeeeeee!!!!

Nige..

Open Defender and click on the settings tab. Look for the tab on the LH side.. 'Real-time protection' and click on it. If this is ticked.. it is running all the time and you've no need to worry. Be aware that some downloads don't like AV.. UK2000 doesn't like MSE these days and I guess, Defender.. neither do Milviz products. You have to turn off Real-time protection while downloading AND installing in order to guarantee a good install. Simply turn RTP back on when you've finished ;)
Obviously.. don't turn RTP off for everything  I know that UK2000 and Milviz don't like AV so I mentioned it. All MV stuff warns you to turn your AV off for downloads and installs so heed the warning as it probably won't work if you don't. UK2000 stuff used to be fine but I know from experience that odd things will happen these days if you try and install with it on.
