Made first flight on FSX in my new laptop flying from EBBR to EGPH and so far, everything went smooth!!

Interesting fact is that in my old laptop, FSX averaged between 10 and 15 fps. In my new laptop, FSX averages between 25 and 32 fps. Makes me wonder if I can extend the fps setting from 32 to 40 or 50 for laptop???? What is reasonable fps setting for FSX for laptop?

Hope to return to Vatsim soon!!!!

Hi Aharon,
Throw caution to the wind.
Set to unlimited fps and let it rip. :cpu:
Then you'll see what your machine is made of.
Whether that may interfere with long-haul VA flights is unknown to me.
Those long flights seem to be the cause of problems, because as discussed on this forum previously, Microsoft programmes have a bad habit of not forgetting what has passed, they drag all sorts of irrelevant clutter along with them, and eventually it all gets too much. :'( :'( :'(

Why bother with anything above 25 fps - thats what cinema film fps is, unless you want to replay in slo mo. I think for FSX anything above 15 fps in unnecessary unless you are doing Mach 1 at ground level......

TBH, I can't argue with that, Keith. :agree:
On the occasions that mine has shown over 100fps, it doesn't look any different to 25.
It would still be interesting to see what Aharon can get, though.

The FR argument is one that has been going for years and will continue to haunt us as long as there are sims. Unfortunately, there is no magic setting.. all our rigs are different and we all have different ideas on what looks smooth. Having a lower setting (25fps for example) can choke the sim.. especially in areas where there's a lot going on and/or you're doing mach 1 at ground level  Others say they get better overall smoothness with the sim set to unlimited while the most popular train of thought is to set it at half your monitors refresh rate (if you have a 60hz monitor, set the fps to 30). I've tried em all many times and found that some settings work just great in certain circumstances but not in all. This can be said for all of em I guess. I always tend to go back to 30fps (I've a 60hz monitor) and accept the compromises this gives. It's not as good as unlimited (in certain circumstances) and better overall than a lower setting.

Then.. I do beta testing in FS9 and wonder why the hell FSX can't run as well

I can see the difference between 25fps & 30fps, above that I don't really notice a difference. 25 is quite stuttery, but that may be due to using a 60hz monitor & things getting out of sync. Normally I set fps to unlimited in the sim and limit it to 30 via nVidia Inspector. As Dave said, every system is different so it's best just to experiment and see what works for you. :)

Thanks to Airspeed, Dave B, DaveG (no relation unless both Daves tell me they are twin brothers), and DaveOne for interesting explanations.

Airspeed, I limit my flights to between 90 minute and 2 hour flying. Do not have time for more than 2 hour of flying per flight or otherwise you would have seen me piling up 300,000 screenshots out of long haul flights!! I have 11,000 screenshots waiting for me to edit and publish out of my 90 minute to 2 hour flights that I took in my old laptop.

I think I will experiment up to 35 ot 40 fps. That is all.

By the way, my new laptop has cool feature giving me TWO temperature readings of laptop (one for laptop and one for video card) every second!!! During FSX flight, the laptop averaged 55 degree of temperature. Is 55 degree normal?

Aharon
