My last four have been Vauxhall Zafiras, but as they are no longer made - had to look for something else. Passed the local dealer after having my foot dressed and drooped in. After a test drive I immediately that this was the one for me - similar driving position and comfort.

I have been very impressed with the comfort of the driving position and quietness of the diesel engine. Bult in sat nave and head up display is also much appreciated.

As far as being able "to move itself" - came up Whitwell Hill on the A64 in 6th gear with dropping off in speed. Garrowby Hill? - no problem.

Peugeot are acknowledged as being one of the leading diesel manufacturers in the world mate so the engine should give you few problems  I've had 3 'Pugs' over the years.. all petrol. The first.. a 309GRi had a mysterious electrical problem that the dealer couldn't resolve so I chopped it in for a 405. This was a good car let down by it's 1600cc engine. Nothing wrong with the engine as such but the 405 was a big car for so few cc's. Traded it in after about 4years for a 2litre 406 which I loved. Both this and the 405 drove very well.. better IMHO than the equivalent 'in class'. Drove it for many years and the only real niggles were electrical. Two engine speed sensors failed (which stopped the car on both occasions) and a little box associated with the aircon 'let go'. The aircon still worked but this little box would 'click' 3 times every few seconds.. vaguely annoying and £180 to fix.. twice! At 145,000 miles.. it started slipping out of 3rd and by this time.. the repair was uneconomical to have done so reluctantly, it went to that big scrappy in the sky (or Walsall as it happens) It cost me a few quid over the years.. replacement clutch at around 78K.. new discs and callipers were far from cheap but they could be put down to wear and tear. Of the 145K on the clock.. all but 5k worth were mine.

My current wagon is a 2007 407SW with 1.6 diesel. Bought it last year (Feb) in exchange for my old 2001 306 2 litre HDI estate. I got 1000€ for it & they put it up for sale at 4500€!!! Power steering on the 407 is the electro-hydraulic type which for me is a bit too much & the steering is very good on twisty stuff, but not too good on the straight where it can wander easily, so requires more attention. The 406 was purely hydraulic assist & directionally very good in a straight line, but also good on bends.
Only problem so far with the 407 is that the FAP (particulate filter thats used on both Citroen & pugs) warning light has come on a couple of times & also gone into 'limp' mode (not more that 3000 rpm) for a short while. Luckily I've managed to then race the motor in a lower gear to burn off the accumulated soot & after a few days the warning light has gone out. It's a problem really caused by not running it on dual carriageways or the autoroute where it will get hot enough. 90 kips is the norm around here, so I keep her in 4th more often, doesn't seem to affect consumption.
I believe the latest engines use a different fluid for the FAP.

Speed nowadays on most cars is inversely proportional to the distance the RH pedal is from the floor, or if its the middle pedal its proportional. (Having got caught 3 kips too much on the autoroute obviously badly set cruise control(!) outside of Nantes last year, first time since 1955 - been very lucky in all those years)
