Something of a saga....turned out that ALL the files from cab15 onwards had "completed downloading" several Mb short of the actual, so had to redo a swag overnight.
Totally agree with the GUI-it's very poor for any programme.
Did a flight Ballarat to Point Cook, running into a thunderstorm on the way...turbulence was scary in the Piper Warrior, but we landed in one piece. Why no raindrops on the windscreen during the rain? And despite numerous lightning flashes, I heard no thunder.
Bit let down by the water, supposed to be animated, but didn't even see the breakers around Point Cook. Maybe I've got to click a few more buttons. Reserving judgement at this stage.

Hiya Mike
The GUI is a pig isn't it. Too many of the pages look the same leaving you feeling bewildered
I've still not attempted to RTM which probably isn't helping but when I select 'I just want to fly'.. it seems to do it's stuff ok. I was miffed by the amount of time the decompression was taking for tropical water (something we don't have in the UK) and found a page to turn it off. Loading using this method takes a fair bit less now.
When I've selected the second BIG button (I want to be arty-farty).. the program has come up with an error saying the weather theme couldn't be found

I've been worried that the program went to 2 directories - C:\ and C:\ (x86) - as it says to make sure it only goes to C:\ but it did this itself. When the install directory came up.. it said C:\ so I left it. The cabs are the files on C:\(x86). This said.. if it can make weather 'on it's own'.. I guess the install is correct and I must be doing something wrong.
I'm not sure about the water animation mate. I presumed it was a better/different version of the default.. not that it would give water crashing against rocks 'ala Earthsims'
Also.. I take it that once the prog has loaded and the selections have been installed (eg, water, runway textures e t c).. these stay installed regardless of whether REX is loaded again or not. My FSX certainly looks different. I'd presumed you only got a different 'look' when you started REX first but this doesn't seem to be the case
I like what it does (how it looks) but I'm not sure how it's doing it

Apart from the weather, all it does is to overwrite the default textures. (Don't forget to save the default configuration).

Hi George
Are you running this programme on your own setup?
One of the early bits in the set up is a "back up textures" button, so I think Dave would have that covered, even without RTFM.

Dave, and others
Suggest you do check the manual for this:
9. If you wish to view high-definition textures within FSX, you must make sure to set this value in the FSX.cfg file. Add TEXTURE_MAX_LOAD=4096 within the DISPLAY section of the FSX.cfg file.
I've done that, and it does make a difference. I suppose that you all did that ten years ago after a tip from Ben?
I'm assuming that this affects every HD available to fsx, not just REX.
They also have special cloud draw distance 100mi - not FULL RIGHT, plus turn off default turbulence effect, which clashes with REX +OD

Thanks for that Mike
I'm pushing this old dog to the limit already so HD clouds may just kill it. I'm happy with the lower res versions for now

Oh boy, there decreases the weight in the wallet again, although with REX for £14 I've managed to justify it to SWMBO as an early b'day pressie!

Well done Dave

It's quite a stunning bit of kit though I still don't know who's in charge
