I've installed Java 7.0.250, enabled the helpers and rebooted and, in itself, that's made no difference at all. The Java website again says that it's installed correctly. I'm not sure how, but is it possible that there's something in the Java configuration that's affecting this - I would assume from Ben's comment about not having Java installed that this is unlikely, but, to be honest, I'm rather grasping at straws here.
I also tried setting compatibility view for all websites, and that too made no difference.
BTW, the reply button is actually here, but invisible ...
Thanks for the suggestions anyway,

Ro

Ro, what AV are you running? I'm beginning to think this isn't a browser issue.

Ro, is this what you are getting?
Gordon

How did you get that Gordon?

That's what I get on ie10 on windows 7 64bit on my MacBook Pro, if I switch on one of the "Accessibility" tick boxes in inside ie10's settings. I'm wondering if that's what Rohan is getting, because the Accessibility settings are closely tied into style sheet settings and what you tell ie10 to ignore from the web site.

Certainly sounds possible mate. I must admit I never go near the accessibility options.

Guys,
FWIW, my AV is m$'s own MSE updated with the latest signatures at least once a day - not the best (but what is in this ever dynamic field), and the price is right, and it has saved me from some serious problems on several occasions.
From what I can tell in Gordon's screen shot, that looks pretty much like my images in IE9 and IE10. Having said that, like Ben, I never go near any "accessability" settings. Since you've been kind enough to offer that as a possibility, I will of course check that later when I have a "play" with my Apple toys. Gordon, how on earth did you discover that connection, and did you notice whether the page buttons (like reply to a post) were visible and / or present ? In my case, the buttons are simply invisible but usable, provided you know more or less where they are on the page ...
Thanks once again for your continued interest in my little problem,
best regards,
Ro

I'm afraid that there were no entries selected on the accessibility options on IE10, assuming that I was supposed to be checking on the first tab of the Tools / Internet Options applet (couldn't find accessibility anywhere else). I did get a change when I cleared the option for Windows colours on the Colours button of that same applet tab, but all it did was to give some colour to the background instead of it all being blinding white. I changed that back.
BTW, I'm currently on Safari here, and not only do I actually get the slideshow of aircraft images in the header bar, but the list of smilies by this "post a reply" field is very different from that I see with IE (all versions). For one thing, quite a few are animated ...
Ho hum - back to work,
