Since I joined their forum in 2005, I have had many discussions on their forum and have downloaded many files from their server. Consequently, I never hesitate to donate annually for maintenance of their servers or software.
Over time one gets to know some of the other members. In this case I'd rather send some money to someone I know, rather that hand it off to some panhandler downtown or on a street corner in my city.
I don't think the recipient was actually airing any hardships, but had started a thread looking for technical advice when his computer died. And one thing led to another. But to be honest, he now owes me a beer or two...
