Hello Mate
As I mentioned in that lot.. the issue with the Win7 pc not printing is that it doesn't see the printer on the WinXP pc. I think it chooses to ignore the Win7 pc full stop

I could resolve the issue by allocating a common network but as I bought the print server to do this, I never pursued it too much. Unfortunately, I never installed the print server either

If you are not bothered about color, I picked up a Samsung ML-1670 Laser ay Walmart (Asda) about 9 months ago for $49. It has been (touch wood) faultless and high quality. I would heartily recommend it if it is available in the UK.
I also have a HP C3100 for color and scanning but hardly ever use it as I have Scottish blood running thro' my veins and deep pockets/short arms.

For what it's worth, I'm using a Canon PIXMA ip4850, and being a Yorkshireman with equally deep pockets and short arms, I buy my inks from: -

Cannot fault them for price/quality/delivery/mileage.

Graham, you're fortunate if you have found reliable generics.
Last year, we got a full refund and switched suppliers over this issue.

Well, here's another money-saving tip from Which? for you, Graham. Amongst the many different tests they've done on printers and running costs, they've just done one on fonts. Which font you choose to print in can make a huge difference to how much ink you use.
They wrote a one-page letter and printed it as many times as they could before the ink ran out and then repeated it with 7 different fonts! Times New Roman printed 27% more pages than Arial and the worst one was Verdana. Well, who'd have thought it, eh? Perhaps they should rename it Times New Yorkshire

Thanks for all the replies.
My printer is a C4480 all in one. Worked fine on XP, not recognised on Win7.
My price range is around £100.

Ted. Sorry if this sounds obvious, but can we assume that you've downloaded the latest Win7/64 driver from the HP website and installed it? And followed the instructions and help guide on the same page?

If so, I can't think of any obvious reason that it wouldn't work.
If you're still having problems after trying that, I'll certainly have a look at Which? and check their 'Best Buys' for around £100.

I'm with Ian on this Ted. Your printer has 64-bit drivers.. that is, HP have 64-bit Win7 drivers for it. Gads.. they even have Win8 drivers for it so drivers-wise.. everything is out there you need. You're not getting a little bored and fancy something else do you?
I had a 5540 at the pub.. mainly for the scanner and fax though the fax became redundant.. no one faxes anymore. It wasn't the best quality bit of kit I've ever had but it did the job I bought it for and didn't break the bank. I found the cartridges pitifully small. I also had a Samsung ML1210 B&W laser for printing mundane stuff.. leaflet drops, that sort of thing and for colour.. I had an HP990Cxi which I have to say was probably the best printer I've had. I'd still be using it now were it not for the fact it was packed at an angle for moving up here (didn't have the original box) and as a result, the cartridges leaked.. all over the main board

It had a double-side print adaptor too so I could print both sides without having to fart around reloading paper.
The toner cartridge ran out on the laser and these cough up at around £50.. hence my reason for buying the HP1050A at around £26 inc postage

You get what you pay for mind you. This said, it does everything I want.. quick scans and the odd doc print. Quality is similar to the old 5540 but leagues away from the 990 Cxi.. now superceeded many times over by HP. The 1050A doesn't have a fax.. I don't want a fax, I don't need a printer that will fax.
In the end, it all boils down to what you want to use it for. If you want high quality text and picture prints.. you'll have to pay a bit extra but in any case, you should be able to pick up a decent unit for £100

Well, I had a look at the Best Buy all-in-ones anyway. Prices quoted are a guide but they can vary so it's worth shopping around - but I've looked at around £100 or less.
71% Canon Pixma MG5450 £93
70% Canon Pixma MX515 £65-90
70% Epson Stylus Office BX535WD £106
There are also plenty of printers that are not shown as Best Buys but still get good scores.
69% Canon Pixma MG5250 £90-175!!
69% HP Deskjet 3070A £50
68% Canon Pixma MG6250 £99
68% HP OfficeJet 6600 £70-99
68% HP OfficeJet 4620 £60
67% Canon Pixma MX435 £50-60
etc. etc. etc. You'd need to check the specs to make sure they do what you want. Hope this helps.
