Thanks Dave and Ben, have not really noticed any difference in using DX10 compared with 9, unless I am not paying enough attention!!

so will continue on with 9.
Many thanks for the advice.
Kind regards
Nigel

So, to go for a direct, blunt answer; if I'm flying FSX only aircraft, and I don't have any extra AI, will I see an improvement with the Preview DX10 box ticked?
I have an ATi Radeon HD4780 card (if that makes a difference)

Why not try it

Well I could try it. It just seems that if all those fixes need downloading and at the end of it all its no bloody different, seems a bit of a waste. I know there are people on here with far,far more knowledge on these matters (most in fact!)

As with most things FSX, results can vary greatly between PCs, so the only way to know for sure is to try it.

I'm with PaulC - dxdiags tells me this machine is using DX11, which AFAIK is backward compatable. I have a fair mixture of addon aircraft, native, port-over etc and they all look fine. I can't see the point in introducing a known problem (DX10) and then doing a lot of stuff to make it work.

Just remembered!!

When I did try DX10 the only thing I noticed was that the sea was much brighter and more reflective i.e. clouds, had setting at X 2 High but with DX10 had to reduce it to X 2 Low.
Apart from that I cannot recall anything else.....yet!!
Nigel.

Having thought about it, loosing all the Classic FS9 stuff just isn't worth it. I've played with the ATI card control panel after a bit of research. Seems to have got me a few extra FPS. I'll content myself with that for now.

Hi Mike,
As the man in the Nationwide bank ad used to say "It doesn't work like that"
Think of each of DX9, DX10, DX11 as a standard. DX11 doesn't include 10 and 9, and DX10 doesn't include 9, they are all different. Modern graphics cards will support each of these "standards." FS9 and initially FSX were coded to use the DX9 standard for displaying graphics. When FSX was released there was a lot of shouting that it didn't support DX10 standard which had just been released and offered a lot of enhancements over DX9, so in the subsequent service packs they included a DX10 "Preview" mode with FSX. The reason FSX wasn't DX10 was probably more to do with the fact that none of the existing aircraft would have been displayed properly, but most of the FS community didn't understand that back then, we do now though

Thanks for that, Ben. This machine has FSX and FS9 on it, and I am happy with what I see. Wasted too much sim time over the years fixing instead of flying, to go back to that.
Of course it is just possible I might be the teensiest tad prejudiced, given the half-baked initial release and the subsequent SP1, SP2, and DX 10 shambles.
