Well.. it does and it doesn't or to put it another way, it can but not necessarily If you have loads of lines in the cfg (like Vancouvers example) and all are active, that is, not remmed out, then FSX can see them all and will trawl through the lot before it loads in the 'Select Aircraft' window and what you'll see in the window is all the aircraft contained therein. But.. if you have all of those folders chocka block with models and you don't want them all active at the same time, by remming the cfg lines out, FS can't see them and your 'Select Aircraft' choice will be faster as it will only load the active lines

It's as much to do with housekeeping as anything else mate. By having multiple folders, you can keep stuff where YOU want it to be rather than have a single, overgrown folder as was the case in FS9. My workaround there was to have 2 additional folders outside FS.. FS Active and FS inactive and to see or not see stuff 'in sim' I'd drag aircraft out of the 'Aircraft' folder and drop them into either of the 2. FSX allows you to control what you see in a much more elegant fashion

Just a footnote to this subject. It certainly applies to P3D - I don't know about FSX but I would think it's possible.

If you hide or delete any default aircraft, the next time you start the sim you will get a Windows message stating "please wait while windows configures p3d" with a progress bar. Windows has detected what it thinks are missing system files and is kindly replacing them for you

For instance I moved most of my default aircraft into an Archive folder and commented it out to hide them.

Not to worry. Simply delete the desktop icon for the sim, create a new one and carry on with your life as though nothing had happened.

I know none of us fly the default aircraft but it's always good policy to leave them in situ. I did it once in FS9 without planning once and what a joy it was. All of my default flights start with the Cessna so FS was having a whale of a time trying to start. Never seen so many errors As DG mentioned earlier, lots of other aircraft 'alias' to defaults which is another good reason to leave well alone.

And not forgetting using a default aircraft to re set the sim before loading a complex addon model with bespoke coding.

I didn't move all of them, just most. The one in the default flight remains and one or two that I might decide to fly if I get drunk

It makes the selection screen nice and tidy and works fine now I've put windows in it's place!

I suspect it will return to bite you matey. Thou must not touch the default A/C was a lesson I learned long ago

With any default aircraft I don't want in the selection screen, I edit the aircraft.cfg for the offending aircraft & change the "panel=" line of each paint scheme to read "panel=n".

This will remove it from the selection screen, but FS can still use it for AI, and any aliasing will still work.

I've still got the main default ones in situ but the ludicrous ones are commented away until such times as a) I get drunk and fancy flying one or b) Ben's prediction comes true and I get bitten! In which case I'll use Dave's solution

I just bin the panel folder from aircraft I don't want to see.. those I'm using for AI that is, not the others

I actually reorganised my folders this afternoon and now I'm buggered if I can find anything
