It has quite a short, stubbly wingspan.
That means it needs to maintain fair amount of speed to stay in the air and avoid a stall.
Not something you could fly in a relaxed manner. 100% concentration needed.
The Wildcat caught me out a few weeks ago when I was attempting some low and slow stuff.
It pretty much fell out of the sky. Fortunately I was only about 10ft off the ground so it suffered very minor damage.
That thing has rear facing prop so the motor is safe most of the time, unless of course you land inverted!

Rgr on the grass landings Eddie

Thing is.. it's a darned expensive model to break isn't it and I certainly wouldn't want that! All my landings in the Champ are like catching a wire and it pee's me off. I'd hate to be more pee'd off with it happening to a model over twice the price!

Still.. I
do have a lot of water (miles of canals surrounded by wide open spaces) so this is definitely an option.. he says running before he can walk

I guess that means I'm a boring old fart!
Nah Peter. I'm afraid I'm one of those who didn't get to the end of the vid

That wasn't because I got bored though

I suddenly thought to myself.. I wonder if anyone has made an Icon for FS so I stopped the vid and went for a look. As it happens, there IS one and it's for FSX so I downloaded it and went for a play around the Channel islands

Here's a shot I took of it yesterday..
It doesn't look as good as the 'Flight' model and the interior is nowhere near the same standard. It's something different though and works relatively well

Well it looks pretty good Dave...BTW, I believe that on the real aircraft the wings can be folded back along the fuselage for transporting on a trailer or hangaring in a garage!
Another thing about making a video in Flight is that it is more like flying an RC model...You have to FLY the video!...Not like FS9 or FSX where you can fly the pattern or display in the cockpit and then video other outside views in the RECORDING. In MS Flight, if you want an outside view then you have to FLY in the outside view and shoot the video while you are doing it...There is no facility for recording and playing back in another view to make the video.
You might get some worthwhile practice at RC flying if you fly an aircraft in FS9 or FSX in TOWER VIEW...make sure it is manoeuvrable enough to keep it in sight...Possibly an Auster or Tiger Moth might be suitable. Anyway, I'm certain I would be very bad at flying RC...I have enough difficulty flying outside the cockpit in MS Flight!

Rgr that Peter

I'd certainly not try anything like the Icon A5 RC model as a beginner unless I had a shed load of cash and could afford the breakages. The thing you don't realise with RC models.. even ones like the Champ, is the speed they go. The Champ is quite easy in calm winds (eg, almost zero) but becomes challenging in light, gusty conditions. It's weight and lift mean it can be flown quite slowly but I doubt you'd get the same response from the Icon which as Eddie pointed out, has quite short, stubby wings and needs the speed to keep it in the air.. like his Wildcat
I'm sure you'd master it in short order Peter. Coordination is what you need and you have that

I'd not go for the Icon as a first model though.. something like the Champ or Cub are perfect.. perhaps the EZ Hawk that Eddie had too though that looked markedly faster than either the Champ or Cub
The FSX Icon model falls short of the MS Flight version internally Peter. I landed on the sea and spent a while watching it bob up and down then went inside to find the AI was misplaced.. due I reckon to the up and down motion in FSX! There's a nice photoreal 2D panel available for it which I may just try. Looking at how you're able to fly through loops in 'Flight'.. I think the FSX model lacks performance. Still, it looks like an Icon and it's amphibious so it'll do

Oh.. as Garry mentioned above, there's no pilot which looks darned odd if you ask me!

well you know, some people just don't know what they're miss'n.
I can say one of my most memorable moments in FS was tagging along side you in that multi fly we did over Hawaii.
In RP's Chipmunks.
