I always thought Denmark was a peaceful country until I started watching 'The Killing II' which is on the telly atm. Pretty scary - on second thoughts perhaps you'd better not step outside after all.

Unfortunately, we're not able to see NL were we live now ... (in the suburbs of Copenhagen) ... but as a kid, we lived in the countryside in a small village with a huge dried-out lake just beside our house. and walking down there you came out of the city lights and you could actually see NL there ...!

But it is not a common sight in Denmark mind you... you have to go a bit more north for that... Norway, and Northern Sweden is a better place for such escapedes


Anyway we've just got a new German Sheperd, so certainly no fears of going outside along with him ...

Hi Dan, you're about the same as Northern England/Southern Scotland for latitude there roughly I think

I've had a fascination with the Northern Lights for many years and was hoping I would get a better chance to see them when I moved to Canada. Unfortunately I am now a lot further south here than I ever was in the UK (I am on the same latitude as Rome believe it or not) so my chances of seeing them are less not better.

When I lived in the UK I always said I wanted to go to Norway twice, once to see the midnight sun and once to see the Northern Lights. You have to go above the Arctic Circle to see either at their best.

I didn't see them properly

Just a few changing colours to the North but nothing spectacular, lasted three of four minuets

In FS they appear in front no matter which way you're facing so they are wrong a lot of the time

Still nice though.

Here's a couple of shots I grabbed in FS2004 during one of last year's FS Round The World Race practice sessions. They were taken on a flight from Norway over to Canada just after sunset.




Strangely I don't think I have ever seen the Northern Lights in FSX.

I have seen them in Scotland a few times. Funnily enough the best ones I have seen have both been here in Redditch Worcestershire. No 1 being during the winter of 1985/6.

I've seen them a few times from the cockpit. The pilots would often phone down to let us know the show was on. Unfortunately they couldn't do PAs as most of the punters would be asleep with the blinds down so it was another crew perk

The best time ever was after mum died and dad asked if I could take him to the US to fulfil a lifetime ambition. He was 86 at the time! So I took him with me on a 48hour trip to San Francisco and he achieved three of his most cherished ambitions in one trip. He visited the US and saw the Rockies and the Aurora. He also got a first class seat and to sit in the cockpit for take off and landing!

The Northern Lights were on the return, night leg, obviously. Our scheduled return was delayed by 24 hours due to the aircraft being damaged at SFO by ground equipment and we ferried it back empty (747-400) the next night but they allowed dad to come with us. Halfway through the flight, with the crew fast asleep in First Class I went looking for him. He was right down the back of this big dark empty jumbo all alone sitting in the crew seat gazing out into the darkness at the Northern Lights with a huge grin on his face. Priceless!

I can just imagine him there....a new experience for one with already so many memories

I always hated night flying when they turned the lights back up and virtually nothing of the outside could be seen

I find them fascinating. Even more so now we know you get them on Saturn and I think Jupiter. Makes me realise how insignificant us humans are'
