Nigel, I wish you well with your operation...if it helps at all, I had a Discectomy in 1982...I was only off flying for a month or so and have had no problems since.
I do treat my back with care though, especially with lifting

I'm sure you'll already have thought of this, Nigel, but it'd make a really nice and useful christmas present for Mrs H-J.
A health and safety course in manual lifting. That way you'll know that she won't be able to shirk her responsibilities - like carrying you to bed after christmas lunch!
I hope you're better soon.
Ian

Hi Chaps
Very many thanks to you all for your support, went up to Sheffield yesterday for pre-op medical and all went well, have been told that I will be in for about 2-3 days then home!!!
Peter, nice to know that you have not had any further pain and sounds like the operation is a permanent fix, I think mine was caused through lifting the front sliding door off the runners which was quite heavy to get a new three piece suite in, the door has now gone and we have had a bigger one fitted so no more problems there....hopefully!!
Ian, the poor wife only weighs around 8 stone and with my build the only chance she has of getting me to bed (no rude comments please, this is a family forum)

would be to drag me along the floor!!!!
Again, many thanks and look forward to the New Year when I can get back to the library.
Kind regards
Nigel.

Adding to DelP's suggestion, how about treating your wife to a body building course then she will be more able to carry you around. It's no use employing a wife and not getting your moneys worth!

Best wishes Nigel. I know how you feel. I have a back problem and they would like to put a steel brace in my back. However with the current job climate I will postpone it for a while.

Sorry to hear that Simon
It's not nice is it and feeling like you dare not get the treatment in case life kicks back at you is so wrong but sadly a fact of modern life.
Hope you can get something done
