VPS, Ben ? Thats a TLA I don't know of. 
Paul it's a Virtual Private Server.
Basically a shared server but with resources 'ring-fenced' so that you are guaranteed a certain amount of performance/memory etc. This can then be scaled (and paid for..) dependent on your individual requirements. With shared hosting your site will have to fight for memory or CPU power with whatever other sites are hosted on the server. With dedicated hosting you will have all of the resources but it's very expensive.
The Pond runs on a VPS as it offers the best of both worlds.
