I don't have experience of Win7 but a defrag after installing FSX is a good idea.. it goes everywhere!
I've always been under the impression that FSX Gold had ACC hard coded into it so have been a bit surprised to learn it still comes on a separate disc. As no one else has commented.. I'm obviously wrong
It's a bit like a stain in the carpet...you think it's gone but unless you give it a good deep scrub, any little bits left in are likely to come back e

"In the world of virtual reality things are not always what they seem."
I, too, was surprised to find that FSX Gold and Acc came as two separate installs with their own security codes. Best to install FSX and then run it, then exit and install the Acceleration pack.
In an ideal world it is best to install FSX and/or FS9 on their own hard drive so that all the main files are in one easy to get to site.
The important thing is to take time with the install and set up, getting right at this stage will lessen the chances of problems later on. Note, I said 'lessen' because you never know what will happen in six month's time.
Now, back to installing my kit on the new PC............
I had my FSX in stages - bought the basic pack, then after a while downloaded & installed SP1 & 2. Then decided to buy the Acc pack. I kept the zipped Sp1 & 2 files so I could use again if necessary, so cannot say about the Gold version, but it would seem to be a good idea to load & run in stages!

I thought FSX Gold included 'Acceleration' and would be installed automatically.
One way to check, would be to look at the aircraft available after installing FSX Gold. I believe that the F-18 and Merlin helicopter are only avaialble with the 'Acceleration' pack. So if you can see these, 'Acceleration' is already installed.

If you are still struggling, there is a very good write up on Uninstalling and Reinstall of FSX, you can print out the Instructions by going to the PMDG Site, double click on the support icon this leads you to the Support Desk there listed with other information is the write up.
Let me know if you have trouble finding the site and I will scan the procedure and send it to you by way of a PM.
I have used this procedure when I was having trouble in fact if you go to the PMDG 747X Forum you can see my post on the intro, I use the same user name as on this forum.
By the way I hope the admin on this forum do not mind me mentioning the PMDG Forum, I mean no disrespect to any one, I rate the CNB highly, this Forum as helped me many times
I would post a link but I am not sure how to do it, but should you have trouble finding the site and info I could
