You can save different display profiles in FSX so you can have settings optimised for different areas. In game select Options->Settings->Save to save the current settings and then Options->Settings->Load to select the appropriate profile depending on where you are. I believe X is the first version of FS to have this feature.

I don't know of any way to get FSX to automagically select a profile depending on where you are, I think there may be some issues as if you choose a higher detail level setting it has to load in extra textures etc. which would create a noticeable pause anyway.

Reading that, the fix stops the windows from turning opaque when its raining on certain add-on aircraft...it doesn't add the rain effects on the windows. Or does it ? *-)
I tried the fix a little earlier on, switching FSX's weather to Grey and Rainy, but no streaks of rain etc appeared on the cockpit window while I flew a circuit around Gatwick. So, I guess this fix does only reach as far as opaque windows. However, although I've yet to see this problem, it's useful to have something ready for it if / when it arrives.

That's a workaround I hadn't considered -- thanks for the idea -- but, yes, it would be manual and the frame rate may still become noticeably clunky. I'll give it a try and see if I think it's worth it. If this behaviour could be made automatic, I suppose subtle decreases then increases in the the detail/traffic levels would need to occur in order to minimise any jumps in frame rate, but this would make the system more complicated and they may still be too obvious.
