Thinking out loud here, but could you have two Autopilot gauges? One that you open and close to do all the autopilot setting up George (hardly ever use them myself!) and then another invisible gauge (i.e. position and size section reads 0,0,0,0) that just has a bit of code in that controls whether the autopilot is on or off?
