Well, I fixed it!!!

Just an update for everyone's benefit as a trick worth trying...

My problems turned out to be the CPU overheating as a result of a thick layer of fluff across the top of the cooling vanes on the heat sink. All the other stuff (monitor, etc,) was a complete coincidence.

I tried vacuuming it out but without effect. In the end I had to take the heat sink off, blow the dirt clear with a lot of huffs and puffs (My aerobic exercise for the day, thank you.) and then put it back with a new smear of heat compound.

All is suddenly well.

CPU temperature dropped from 70 + degs to around 40-50 degs and FS9 frame rates whizzing along at 35+. Hurrah!!

Thanks for all the advice here which at least kept me plugging away attrying to solve it....

Hi John, glad you got it sorted.
Garry mentioned a thorough defrag and clean up, which is always good advice.
Unfortunately the Windows Defrag seems designed to trip over its own feet and give up after ten tries, even if you remember to run it Safe Mode.
It appears that it is set to start again, if it detects that a file has been modified since it started; sad to say, it looks as if it doesn't realise the file is modified because it has just been defragged...and so on...and so on...

and scroll down to the free stuff, you will find the defragger I have been using for a couple of years now.
I have found it fast and effective on my XP Pro system. I have not tried their registry cleaner, mainly because I didn't know it was also a freeware
The latest version of the defragger works in XP 32 and 64-bit, Vista ditto, and also in W7.
Might be worth a look?

Yepp, I try to defrag fairly regularly after an experience I had with the JF Tiger Moth that splurged all over the disk and left it looking like our cats had been chasing something all over it. Nothing like a good defrag for making the system feel better....
