My first scenery project........

Re: My first scenery project........
I can remember it very well as my first tour after training so let me know if you need any help. Under the port tailplane of the Herc in the first picture, there should be another hangar, I suspect it was knocked down by the brown jobs when they took it over.

Alas, before my timeI think Trev was stationed there
I spent hours getting Air Experience as a local ATC cadet on Hercs and Andovers. I wanted to make the scenery as it was in 1974 when 242 OCU moved to Lyneham. The grass area (textured) covers up the 'secret' special forces compound that has been there since the 1980s!!!!
Here is an overhead shot, for those that know the area.

OK here goes. The hangar under the port tailplane (next to the one missing) was the home of Aircraft Servicing Flight. I remember we could look out from the crewroom to another hangar next to us from ASF, amongst other things it housed the tech library.
Between the port wing and tailplane is a cream area, this was home to the engine bay, a single storey brick building and the area also housed the Bulk Fuel Installation so there should be some big fuel tanks there.
At the other end of the hangar area you can see one is missing, that was bombed during the war but was used to park/wash aircraft (hence the name sunshine hangar) and was the parade square as well. Alongside the taxiway the outer wall from the hangar was still present.
Across the taxiway was Air Traffic.
Just ahead of the port wing engines is a cream coloured dumb bell shape, this was the compass swing pad and should have some markings on it.
Beyond the hangars and before the sea are some old taxiways, they were the home of 242 OCU with a wooden building as the line hut.
Barrack blocks and married quarters look okay but the mess hall for the Junior Ranks is missing, look as if the NAAFI is still there though.

Funny how you miss things
, I have just looked at the above photo and realised where the hangar went from!!! All sorted now, with the correct number as of 1974!

It was, indeed. I also have charts for the ILS 19 and 2 different NDB approaches using the 'TI' dated 1973 if anyone is interested.Motormouse wrote:Think it was pete.p let me have a copy of the airfield chart...

Info from the internet on Thorney is as rare as hen's teeth
I am still not sure about the 'missing' hangar, I wonder if it was ever built? All the photos I have just show an area of 'hangar shaped' concrete! I am still having a few 'new user' snags with the scenery which (in it's FSX/Horizon VFR form at least) is 95% ready. I am attempting Hamble next, as Tangmere is giving me problems because it is built on a rising slope of about 150ft and getting the 'flatten' to look good needs a bit more experience!
