I always try to be as rude as possible and that is always followed by silence and a click.

If anyone else in the room answers it I ask for the phone as believe it or not, and I mean this, I enjoy giving them a hard time, especially given that our number is ex directory, a point I never fail to mention.

I don't believe in giving them a hard time in general, usually it's just call centre monkeys making minimum wage and trying to fund their way through university. They just do the job they are told and don't deserve to be on the receiving end of a lot of verbal abuse. Trust me, as someone who used to work in a call centre many moons ago (inward calls only I have to say) being abusive gets you no-where. It can be pretty soul destroying to be talking to angry people all day just to try to pay the bills.

My comment regarding the air horn above is reserved for one company that bizarrely seems to be staffed by one guy who keeps hanging up on me when I ask for my number to removed, at least he's the only one who ever answers the phone. If it were any other person calling I'd still try remaining polite and asking for my number to be removed first, and if they aren't able to help then I'd ask to speak to a supervisor. 99% of the time that does the trick.

They do deserve it

It's the same people phoning when form their first calls when I was polite they were told to remove our number and they don't.

They deserve it as I have told them I don't want this number called. If they don't like it then cross us off.

They choose to invade my peace.

Also where I live call calling is against the law as is door to door sales, so my number.....which is ex directory anyway, should not be there. The people who actually make the calls did in the early days, when I would be nice, point blank refuse to get our number removed as that was not their job

One of the nicer things that "W's" administration introduced over here was the "Do not call list" where you could be put on a list of phone numbers that
these sort of calls could not be made to -- still works fine today EXCEPT for people like Sprint (the company we use for mobile service) who think that if
they sell you the service they can call and offer you anything -- as Joe says -- a "Thank you No, click" works well.

sometimes I use the "Don't need it don't want it, couldn't affordit if'n I did"

or sometimes I start talking to them like there the bestest friend in the whole world , and ask them how is there family doing.
or if they have to work on sundays.. if they get paid holidays..
then when they start thier pitch , I say .. yeah yeah , but I don't want to talk about that right now...

Just repeat the same sequence of disjointed works like "I... am... Bob... Marley...! ect or start having a random conversation like why you went with Tannoys over the Q-Acoustics or why Branston beans are far superior to Heinz ect
