Things are of there time.

Not debating about the actual thread topic and the rights and wrongs of using "nigger" in a historical context but just responding to this post; there is in fact a huge difference.
"Gay" is an example of a word that has changed meaning gradually over the years and whilst it used to mean one thing it now means something different. There's nothing unusual in that, language evolves and this happens all of the time, if it didn't we'd still be speaking Anglo-Saxon. However "nigger" is a word that has almost always exclusively been used to undermine black people and you simply cannot compare the two.

Hi Chris
Before this goes all gooey and un-pc, I don't think the word 'Gay' has changed it's meaning.. it has picked up additional useage over the years. To be happy and gay still means the same thing.. to do something with gay abandon still means the same thing. It's more the context of how it's used.
Anyway.. has anyone bought Scampton yet?? I'm keen to know what it's like on framerates given the advertised level of accuracy

It has changed use, or more appropriately is currently in the process of changing and has been since the middle ages, and eventually use of it to mean "happy" will fall almost entirely from the lexicon. Etymological shifts can take many hundreds of years, it isn't something that occurs overnight. One would imagine that as society grows less homophobic its use as a pejorative term will gradually cease as well.

Quite so Chris ;-)
As Homer proclaimed in one very funny episode of the Simpsons.. 'that's our word and we want it back'
Still.. has no one bought Scampton yet! :@

A funny episode of the Simpsons? I don't believe it! There hasn't been one of those for nigh on a hundred years!
Anyway, enough off topic from me, I apologise for dragging the thread off course.

Ehhm, b*ll*cks, being a crusty ageing phart I can remember back to the '50s when shoe polish manufacturers used "Nigger Brown" as a colour description - as did knitting wool manufacturers (according to equally crusty SWMBO).
Have to say that the dog was his personal pet, and not the squadron mascot as far as I have read, and as such the accuracy of and need for the advertising comment escapes me. Perhaps it ain't such an accurate product after all.
Just my 0.83333p (2d) worth.

If you re-read what I said I think you'll find the following highlighted word quite relevant.

I think the point here is that the inclusion of the name of the dog was totally unnecessary. Anyone with a grain of sense would realise that it was controversial to include it, you would not lose a single sale by omitting the name but including it might lead to offence...so why mention it? If they wanted to highlight the level of detail they could mention "
includes the grave and memorial of Guy Gibson's faithful dog"
OFFTOPIC
Is Tuppence = 2d or 2p or 0.83333p ???
Well in 1971 a 2p coin was known as Two New Pence,

so that would be "tunupence"??
However from 1982 the word NEW was no longer included so a 2p coin became Two Pence or Tuppence again

Exactly Jim and pretty much what I said in my first post. We all know the story.. we all know he had a dog and what it's name was and we all know that the simple mention of that poor mutt's name will cause controversy. One could suggest that someone somewhere chose to publicise the product in this way knowing that it would prove controversial and perhaps gain a little more publicity in the process. Not that I'd be the one to make that suggestion ;-)
